Title: What res for vertical games on AVGA?
Post by: menace on January 27, 2004, 12:20:09 pm
I'm now trying to configure my arcadevga for the 25" wells gardener but am having alot of trouble with the vertical games (pacman class--288x224)  The bottom half inch is squished and the top runs off the top of the screen.  Both the windows desktop and the mamewah frontend (both at 640x480) look great.

What resolution should I be setting these too--I let both avres and the arcadevga resolution tool have a crack at it, but they both pick the same (non-working) resolutions.  I tried the "Apply Settings for Low-Res Games with Lines >..." setting and it didn't appear to do anything with these.  vertical pic attached

Any help?

wow, weird pic!  :o

guessing your monitor is mounted horizontially?

are you running one of AVGA's special horizontal resolutions for vertical games?  e.g. 352 x 288 for galaga?  As this is not a true 60Hz mode, this may be causing the display issue with your monitor!?!?!

Anyway, for vertically games on horizontally mounted monitors, you may want to try the following.

- Enforce the res to 640x480
- Enable Hardware stretching
- Disable/Enable Bilinier filtering.  Test what looks better for the game/screen.
- Set the aspect ratio to make the original games res.  e.g. for galaga 288:224
- The effect RGB sharp may also make a difference??? but not that I can tell.

This picture will be interlaced, but its still looks acceptable on my nanao arcade monitor.
