Title: Resolutions problem
Post by: Cisek on May 22, 2017, 05:03:50 pm
Hi

I am using crtemudriver 2.0 on my windows 7 machine. When I try to install resolutions all works fine except resolutions which exceeds 240 lines vertically. They are showed when I generate modelines (generic_15) however they are not added. The only way I am able to install them is to select arcade_15ex, but with this option I cannot sync them properly.
Is there anything I can change in vmmaker to actualyy install those resolutions (256, 288 vertically)?

The arcade_15ex preset is an extension of the arcade-15 preset, which itself is an extension of the generic_15 preset, if you want to look at it that way. Each time the horizontal sync range is extended slightly further, and most 15kHz monitors won't handle that. Any chance you played with the sliders in the VMM screens?

I can't think why the modelines aren't installing though.

Maybe he's not running VMMaker as administrator.

Test mode is probably enabled, otherwise he could not install driver.
VMMaker is also probably run with administrator provileges, otherwise custom modes could not be installed.

With arcade_15 or generic_15 all modes should be installed and works at least with typical CRT monitor or CRT TV with PAL and NTSC support. Only some old TV (polish, german) could not support NTSC modes. arcade_15ex will not work with CRT TV.

Cisek, what TV and what cable do You use?

...arcade_15ex will not work with CRT TV.

That's not really true. Most of the more common modes (480i, 240p) will work on any TV. And the modes closer to 16.2kHz may work too, it depends on the TV. Probably a good idea to start on generic_15 and move up bit by bit though.

Sure, many modes will work. After all it's extension of arcade_15 but additional modes will not work on standard TV so it does not make sense to use arcade_15ex with TV.

There are thousands of different models of TVs. Their H frequency bandwidths vary considerably. Many won't support arcade_15ex but, I can also assure you, that many do.

Problem is that nobody has documented a reliable, step-eisr procedure for determining TV monitor specs.

For years most people simply experiment and then say "close enough" once they have a solution for their fave games.

Well, maybe but all TVs I have/had here in Poland (Sony Trinitrons, Philips, Samsung, Elemis, Thomson) didn't support arcade_15ex extra modes. Only once (I don't remember exact mode or even TV I used) I saw working mode but with distorted picture. One mode did work but picture was bad.

Anyway, every TV I had/have (except polish Elemis - PAL only) supports fully arcade_15 modes.
