Regarding how well it works or the number assigned to a USB controller being consistent, does it make any difference if additional USB ports are connected directly to the computer's motherboard or through a "4 way hub" plugged into a USB port that connects directly to the motherboard? I hope my question is clear......it sounds sort of rambling to me.

Power from the motherboard will be more consistent from the motherboard, depending on USB type. USB 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 are rated at different voltages and data rates. Hubs distribute the power to each plugged in device, unless it is a powered USB 2.0 hub, where each port should get 5v at 480-500 mA.

I wasn't thinking about power as much as how well it worked, but if you have 4 controllers attached through 1 port that is getting it's power from the motherboard I can see your point.
