Hey all,
I'm getting ready to open a commercial space for Gameroom Designs, and am presently working on plans for our showroom. I want to showcase a lot of our products, while instilling a feeling of nostalgia when clients visit, and to me, it wouldn't be a true experience without playing some music.
I was hoping to get your feedback on what music you remember from the days when you visited an arcade. For me, I always remembered classic rock playing fairly loudly, just barely being drowned out by all of the games being played. (Now, being a commercial location, I can't promise that anyone would need to yell over the ambient music, but I do want people to be able to identify their visit with the memory of their visits to arcades in days gone by.)
Personally, I've always leaned towards classic rock, such as:
- Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
- Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son
- Loverboy - Turn Me Loose
- George Thorogood - Bad To The Bone
- Europe - The Final Countdown
I'd like to create a pretty extensive playlist of songs, rather than leaning towards the trend of piping in satellite radio with some random 80's/90's feed.
So, what are your 'go to' arcade songs? Post 'em up, and I'll add them to the list! (And if you've got stories to share that go with the experience, this is the place to tell them!)
Thanks!
Rick
Edit: I'm going to continue to update the playlist with your submissions. Thanks again!

Just get Yotsuya's playlist from Casa De Yotsuya...
But... if you want my opinion, don't clog it up with butt rock....
Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls"
The Clash "Train in Vain"
Fugazi "Waiting Room"
-
Um... Pac Man Fever... :)

I've never been, but I'm sure it's probably amazing. (I mean, he's like, what? 80?) :D
But... if you want my opinion, don't clog it up with classic rock....
Agreed, with edits. I'm all ears on what people want to hear. It's not all about me.

How about Donna Summer - She Works Hard for the Money?
Might give you some things to think about while you sit lonely in an empty store, feeling your savings steadily dwindle to nothing. Such as - do you start sucking cock to make the lease payment now, or hold onto your dignity for three more days?

Have you considered satellite? I'm a big fan of 1stWave on SiriusXM (http://www.siriusxm.com/1stwave), listen to it all the time. It's more alternative and new wave 80's than pop.
I'm going to one-up pbj's Ministry recommendation with some Front242. Not sure how broadly appealing 80's industrial is in a commercial space though. ;D

I am considering it. Obviously, there's a lot of benefit to a proper rotation, and not listening to the same thirty or so songs on repeat. I'll check out some options.

Ha! I was personally going to go with "Stigmata" by Ministry, but thought that may have been more of an acquired taste. ;)

The David Dries, dives, dies, whatever his name is mame intro videos do it for me. I cannot listen to stone in love anymore without the arcade sound effects. Back in the day I was seriously into Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Zepplin, ACDC, Iron Butterfly, you know what I mean... It is hard to pinpoint individual tracks. Most of these are albums, mixes, etc.
Buggles - Plastic Age
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse in your soul
Motels - Little Robbers
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxegene, Rendezvous 4
Orbital - nothing left, doctor?
Petshop Boys - Their entire catalogue
Prodigy - Ditto
Daft Punk - Ditto
Groove Armada - Ditto
Mozart - Violin concertos 4&5
Rachmaniov 2 &3
Frank Zappa - You are what you is, Joes Garage
Bob & Doug Mckenzie - Take Off
808 State - Lift
FGTH- Two tribes, Welcome to the pleasure dome
I think that will do.
-

Some of my gotos:
The Go-Gos
The Human League
A Flock of Seagulls
Anything off "Thriller"
Anything off "Rio"
"Rockit" by Herbie Hancock
"Controversy" by Prince

Nothing says 80s like some good synthesizer music, so I'm recommending Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme.
There've been some excellent retro-wave-"bands" lately who will also do the trick, among else Perturbator, Noir Deco, Lazerhawk etc.
-
Yeah, I'm with churchofsolipism. Get some vapor wave mixes off youtube and at least it won't be stuff you've heard ten thousand times. On top of his list, I'm partial to Com Truise.

All hair metal, all the time. Too many bands to list, but Poison and Def Leppard should top it. Just avoid Winger.... nobody likes Winger.
-
Dangerous Toys
Babylon AD
Metal Church

---fudgesicle--- yeah on "Crockett's Theme". It's my go-to instrumental.

Yuck. The Camero should have been a tip-off I guess. ;D

What has nine arms and sucks? Howard's taste in music.
-
You guys keep telling yourselves that you don't like it. It's just like latent homosexuality.... repressing your true feelings surely won't blow up in your face or anything.
-
Talking Heads - Burning Down the House, Life During Wartime
Just get the full GTA: Vice City soundtrack to cover everything else.

I have about 400 80's videos on loop in my arcade dungeon... so much of it I couldn't stand except in nostalgic context :-) Other than the above, there's so much 80's crap pop that sits there right in the moment, but I hesitate to post it ;D
By the way, if you want a laugh, find the video "Boys" by Sabrina. I don't remember that video from when I was a kid. I remember the song being played... but the video.. hah hah. It ought to be in the cheesecake thread.

Oxygene part IV.
Plays in every arcade I ever went in here in the UK, Classic in the grabs and coin droppers.
-
Oxygene Pt 4: I looked it up, never heard it before.
I've always been amused by the musical/tv/movie differences between the UK and the US. So much culture that's shared, and so much that is not.
-
Can't go wrong with some good old thrash metal :D
-
Yeah, fire up some old Anvil tracks. If there is anybody in your store, that's more people listening to them there than at their concerts.
-
A-ha - Take on Me :D
-
I always preferred The Sun Always Shines on TV, personally.
-

Hair "metal" = :lame:

Nice, yea that's a good track, Side B first song ;D
I'm surprised no one has said Tears for Fears yet. Songs From the Big Chair is solid.
-
Anything from the 80's with a sax solo is on my list....
INXS What you need
Foreigner Urgent
Wham! Careless Whisper
Maneater Hall and Oates
Duran Duran Rio
Men at Work Who can it be now?
-
I dunno, I think you old ---daisies--- need to get out of the 80s. They were a swell, simpler time but.... modernize.
-
The problem is that most new music is just garbage remixes of good music from the past. Same thing goes for movies.

And when you were a kid, you'd say, give me five bees for a quarter and wore an onion on your belt.
-
One day I hope to be as cool as you. Not everyone can pull off the "oldest guy at the rave" look. ;D
-
In all seriousness you are right. My son tells me the same thing. He is a drummer so his musical taste is far broader than mine.
-
What??!!! No "Joysticks" by Legion?! From the smash hit film of the same name?

Must admit it suprises me to.
I never really went in a arcade that played music as such.
They were always filled with the sounds of the games, button mashing, shouting/swearing and like I said Oxygene LOL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO-p-KRZDgA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO-p-KRZDgA)
It was built into most of the grabbers/coin droppers etc.
Its only years later I found out it was a real tune, But it was in every arcade I ever went in LOL

I am regularly amongst the oldest at raves. Nobody cares.

Since AC/DC did the soundtrack to Maximum Overdrive, they really should have had "Blow Up Your Video" playing in the background while Giancarlo Esposito gets fried.

Every time I hear that song, I think of that scene and arcades hah hah.
