Title: Need Help with PC Build for Groovymame
Post by: retrogamer123 on April 25, 2017, 02:43:00 pm
Hi guys, a few years ago the state of the art was the g3258 oc to 4ghz for mame builds.
Is this cpu still a good choice?
Looking at the current lineup of cpu's its looking kinda bad for a good budget build.

Right now I'm looking at two possible candidates
core i3 7320 with 4.1 ghz for 170 euros (a really bad value cpu for what you get)
core i5 7600k with 4.2 ghz turbo for 250 bucks (probably better value for its money)

I'd love to have a mini itx build in the style of the groovycube
http://wavebeam.blogspot.co.at/2016/02/the-groovycube-diy-console-that-plays.html (http://wavebeam.blogspot.co.at/2016/02/the-groovycube-diy-console-that-plays.html)

The most important thing for me is zero input lag. So this thing should be mainly for shmups, fighting, and some 3d games
(battle garegga, bakraid, salamander 2, some cave games, aero fighters 3, killer instinct 2, garou)
and some 3d games.

After reading through the different threads I assume that the best I can get would be
d3d9x with frame_delay 9
as for the monitors...I think I would connect a 15khz crt or a vga 31khz with 120hz and black frame insertion,
but I think the second one wouldn't allow the cpu to handle frame_delay 9 ^^.
Would the i5 be any better in some cases since I think that mame does only use 2 cores most of the time !?

Does anyone know how a overclocked g3258 to idk 4.5 ghz would compare to the i3 7320 ?
And what about 3d games with the i3 7320, like gauntlet legends etc, does anyone have a similar setup ?
What builds do you guys have and how do they perform in terms of input lag?

Looking forward to any tips and suggestions :)
Thank you!

I just went overkill with the core i5 so I didn't have to mess with overclocking.

I have i3 processors in my MAME cabs, and they handle everything I want to play, fine. I'm not sure an i5 would improve things at all. If buying used, just don't get anything earlier than a 4th generation chip.

If you use a D3D9EX build of GM, it takes care of frame delay for you, so you don't have to set it manually, which is great. And now we have PortAudio to take care of sound lag, too. Happy days!

I was gonna get PortAudio installed last week but totally forgot. Is there a guide covering setup for use with GM?

It had me scratching my head, at first. If you look through this thread, you should find all the info you need:

I initially thought I needed to install something to get PortAudio to work, but you don't. It's compiled into MAME.

Thx for your answers. Had a clarkdale cpu flying around
Core i5 650.
With a cooler for 25 bucks I'm now at stable 4.17ghz. Sadly a bit too less for SH3 Games, but bumping it up further would increase my
vcore to 1.39 and the ram clock would also a bit too high then.
Some early cave games run with frame_delay 6 or 7,
3d games like mk4 with frame_delay 0
Quite content atm.
