From Wikipedia:
Haunted Castle is a typical platform game with six levels, which are played through in a linear progression. The player controls the main character, whose primary mode of attack is via his whip. He must fight various enemies which consist partially of skeletons, zombies, fishmen, and hunchbacks. By destroying certain enemies, he can switch his weapon to a more powerful spiked mace or sword. In addition, various "sub-weapons" can be obtained which provide different means of attack which consist of bombs, boomerangs, stopwatches, crosses, and torches. Hearts are collected to use each of these "sub-weapons." The player can only carry one sub-weapon at a time.

Each of Haunted Castle's six levels conclude with a boss fight. Like in other games of the series, these bosses are generally taken from horror literature or legend, and include Medusa, Frankenstein's monster, and, being a series staple, Dracula

Are these the default settings? Please specify in the top post.

Took me a lot of tries to get 13,700. Not sure what to make of this--challenging controls, stuff jumps out at you, tiny bats are deadliest, not a lot of hits before you're dead & you have only 1 guy, not sure why I'm collecting hearts--they sure don't go to my health bar, & how do I use that bomb or mace weapon thing I picked up?

oh crap.  I am now remembering that when my friend came over a few weeks ago (big castlevania fan), we ended up changing my settings.

I'll update the above post tonight when i get home to my machine.  But the difficulty settings by default are normal, which was my intention.  I may have been playing on easy.  My apologies, no foul play was intended. :embarassed: I deleted my score post, and will take another run on it tonight.

I BELIEVE the difficulty settings simply change the amount of energy taken off per hit.  I can get through the first stage without being hit, but we'll see.

Original post updated. I was playing wrong. Again, my apologies. Normal for both settings.

See the grave marked "93?" Duck down with your head JUST to the right of the 3. Face right then keep whipping. Bats can't hit you there. Although Medusa comes alive while one or two bats are still flying, so it's not perfect.

There is three versions of this game. The M one is brutal and is the American one. Two hits and your dead. Pick the K one that's Japan and way more forgiving

Two hits from the bones = death. So frustrating! Finally made the leader board after playing multiple games. I haven't even seen the 2nd stage boss yet - got this score from farming skeleton bones at the beginning of the 1st level.

Also, when medusa animates, keep jumping straight up each second over the mini snakes she launches at your feet and fire your bomb weapon at her from this spot.

For sure. This is really just memorization, and patience. ANY haste, and you will die.

Played a few games each night this week. Managed to kill the 2nd level boss once, then got ---my bottom--- handed to me immediately by roller skating hunchbacks at the start of the 3rd wave.
