Title: The Simpsons Virtual pinball
Post by: Scassidy24 on March 05, 2017, 05:04:47 pm
My new project is well under way

Recently picked up an gutted Simpsons  pinball cabinet (Data East 1990).  Proceeded to completely repaint (thanks mom) .  Mom needed some level of created freedom so this isn't an exact repaint but I am extremely pleased knowing that couldn't even begin to attempt this.

Before:

After:

It took all weekend painting and she really enjoyed it. And I got what I wanted :)

Also picked up a computer from our local pawn shop and a new 39" flatscreen for the pkayfield

I've got visual pinball running and future pinball with BAM.  Tested out BAM with a ps3eye and decided to grab a xbox360 Kinect for BAM.

Also have various cabinet parts.  Speakers and amp, flipper buttons , plunger and nudge / controller stuff on the way . Oh and a dot matrix display.

This one I hope will go together fairly quickly. Hope to have it all done by end of March (fingers crossed I can do it)

Thanks people :)

It's infringing on the pool table space
Gotta find a different spot in the man cave.  I can't give up the dart board. I'm considering trading in the pool table for a poker table. Then I'll have more room for the pinball

Very nice! Using a front end?  Got any links/tips available on how to setup FP for dual monitors. The only way I ever see the back glass on my 2nd monitor is if I hit the Print Screen button...soo weird.

Are you using pinball x? Or hyperpin? The backglass should be setup through your frontend.

I was only using FPLoader without a FE for testing when I tried it. I will load up pinballx and give it a go. Thanx for the tip!!

Got the Kinect power adapter from amazon today. Got it working without too much trouble.
I didn't realize that the back glass should be done through the front end. Anybody have a link they could share for setting up backglass and DMD thru pinball x?  I haven't even begun to look into that.  Now also finding out that some parts from virtuapin.net are back ordered. So could be a while before I have a dmd.

I just use simple backglass images and place them in the appropriate folder in pinball x. I used a dual screen setup so i cant help setup a dmd.

More progress. Made a tv mount and did a test fit
Broke my backglass tv mount. Going to get that sorted tomorrow.   It looks like the backglass tv  will have to go up as high as possible to make room for the Kinect and the dmd.  Looking forward to the big delivery. Should be here in a couple weeks.  Now that the monitor is in the cab and BAM knows the pinball cab dimensions the BAM effect looks and feels more natural.

And yes I know the backglass isn't being displayed properly. Not gonna bother tinkering with that stuff until I have the DMD

Looking good. Yeah i wouldnt waste my time messing around with the software until i was done. That junk takes a lot of dicking around to get it right. Any plans on force feedback? Shakers? Rgb?

No plans for force feedback.  I don't know if I want to invest the time and Money into all the DOF stuff and another purgatory of "dicking around"
If I had a chance to try a table with force feedback maybe i would be more interested.  Ya know what I really can't get over. The fact that I can't hear the ball rolling on the play field.  I was at my local Barcade the other day and the tables play fast and heavy. The balls seem so floaty and light in future pinball sometimes.

with VP9 and VPX you basically set up the outputs 1 time through DOF (that piggy backs on B2S backglass plug in), and all the other tables just pull form that config. You dont set it up on a per table basis.

For example you set up pop bumper 1 , pop bumper 2, pop bumper 3, left slingshot, right sling shot, left flipper, and right flipper. All the games with those things will work.

Look up Terry reds pinkadia, lots of good information there.

Get and xboxone one kinect the 360 one is crappy in night time environments, the xboxone kinect is flawless and tracks more accurately.

Your also in luck, if you want DOF feedback i have a slew of contactors and and open fram solenoids I'm going to sell here shortly.

Hi - a question about using the new Kinect. I've been collecting parts for my vpin for a while - I'd planned on using the PS3 eye cameras but having to mess around with lenses seems a pain in the ass. Does the Kinect work as well?

With regards to dof- have you looked at this? Seems way less hassle than solenoids...

If you do a kinect use the xboxone kinect.

Using sound for DOF to me makes no sense, go with the solenoids they are cheap....open frame or automotive.

I had bought an Xbox one Kinect but because of the need for windows 8 or better I returned it and managed to find an xbox360 Kinect for $19 at the local pawn shop :score!:   It's great when your alone but wen I had a room full of people had to go back to static cam in BAM because it kept picking up the movement of people around me.  Not sure it the Xbox one Kinect would handle that better.  Anyway I'm going to stick with the 360 Kinect for the budget on this one. And yes I can testify that the 360 kinect doesn't perform in low light.

360 is better for the budget, but your accuracy will be off, which is why is stepped up to the ONE, also the 360 model does not track very well at night. If you read on the bam site, ONE is the suggested overall pick for BAM.

You are right though it does track those around you, I normally just tell folks to stand more towards the back and not directly behind me, for some reason its likes the color blue, anyone with a blue shirt it pick is immediately.

Nice one - that's exactly what I wanted to know.  It seems to me that budget pretty much goes out of the window when you're doing a vpin anyway!

I'm still not sure about the solenoids though. On Aussie arcade they're raving about how good the speakers work in terms of table feedback. I'm not much of a pinhead though so I'll probably have to try both and see which one I prefer.

I didn't read that whole 17 page thread but it sounded like the audio force feedback thingy hadn't been tested with future pinball.  It may be a matter of choosing between vp and fp if going that route

I'm gonna finish my cab before I worry about force feedback. I don't think I'll bother in the end. I've made compromises to accommodate budget already. And often my gaming happens after the wife's gone to bed. solenoids = noise
For me having a real DMD is the icing on the cake.   I don't think my cab will win any awards in the community but it'll be good looking and entertaining.

Yeah if your gonna do it go solenoids or contactors, its just sounds and feels more natural.

There is a night mode configured for Future pinball which shuts down all DOF toys, and sound only.

I said same thing prior to my build, oh i dont need all of that but you will want it sooner than later, it completes the build totally.

There are no community awards, they were Canadian Arkilled, so don't worry about em.

You can just wire a toggle switch to the power line feeding the solenoids, flip the switch and there's no noise. I really cant put in to words how much better a VPin is with them. They arent exactly a budget buster either. I think I spent like $50 on it?

well close.....

Sainsmart USB 8 port relay was $25 ,
ZYE1-0837ZP (Solenoids) are about $5 a pop, so 35
resistors were like $2

so $62. I had wiring on hand. There are other ways to do it , like if you have an LEDWiz sitting around collecting dust.

DOF is not that difficult to setup, and it adds a whole lot to the experience.  I added some gottlieb chimes to my cab and playing em's and having it hit real chimes on scoring is pretty f'in amazing.

eeek, thats the one thing about these things is DIY to save money, pin2dmd is the same concept at a fraction of the cost on the dmd above. :dunno

shield + discovery board + china led board = a diy dmd 130 max.......

lol...you just put it together, there was a big argument on who thought of it first....virtuapin marked it up, and pin2dmd countered and made it affordable and easy to assemble for the DIY community.

Plus its not really plug and play there are little nuances you have to deal with per table to get that thing to work.

But your right the kit guys make a killing due to customer convenience demands...

oh dont make the mistake and feed 12v to that thing, you think leds = 12v in an array like that, but it takes 5v.

So I'm having difficulty settling on how to proceed with the back box.  I've got all the components.

DMD
4" speakers
Xbox 360 Kinect
26" tv

I was thinking of mounting a big 1/2" thick piece of MDF because that's perfect thickness  for the mounts on the DMD and Speakers  but it pushes the tv screen back a 1/2" because I dont want the frame or buttons or power lamp to show on the tv.   Any tips/suggestions out there? Maybe I should router a space for the tv frame to get the screen more flush with the face of the backboard. Or are people doing these in multiple pieces?  I was also thinking I would cut an access panel in to the back of the back box to access for servicing all of these components

And that kinect moves when it needs to be calibrated.  I'm wondering if I dare mount it into the backglass board will it still be able to work.  Any of you have experience with this?

That's one of the issues of a vpin, your backbox has to be custom.

Your gonna need to route yourself a bezel to the specs of your tv screen so only the screen shows.

I routed out my dmd and kinect and placed plexi in front of both.

This is why i recommended the xboxone kinect it has a larger viewing area and doesnt move during calibration, so it doesnt need to be at a tilt, and is easier to mount as its a perfect rectangle.

Yes you will need an access door to service your components and you might add a fan to that door to move the heat the TV and dmd will create.

I can take photos if you wanna see my setup.

I'm right there with you. I've moved on to the sound system, nudge, and button wiring for now.  I got all of that mounted too.  At the risk of losing the ability to play some games I've decided not to add any visible additional buttons.  I stuck an "exit" button under the front of the cabinet and another extra button for who knows.   Things like the iron man table that has a button you have to use to select the music at the beginning of gameplay

Also for the time being.  (Hopefully very short term.  I've taped  a couple arcade buttons for players 1-2 coins as I don't have any coin mechs.  I had planned to rob some out of a coin door held on to  from an Atari pole position cab I gave away but the mechs don't seem to be compatible.  Will have to order mechs. $$$. I really just did this as placeholders for the wiring

And here are some pics.  Yes it looks absolutely horrid in this state.  And you can see that I'm so cheap that I've opted to use speaker wire for all the buttons.  At least I was able to rock out with the new sound system while making daisy chains for the grounds.    (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170321/c207c9ce366652fce23081c6d21b9bae.jpg)

I'm just trying to get electronic things in place so I can do some cable management  ran out of time tonight gotta get to bed so I though I'd just post where I'm at. Not that it's presentable lol.

That backbox setup is temporary. Just used a piece I had cut and failed on to help me visualize what I want on the next attempt

Will I still have analog plunger on other games if I do that?  Will test.  Or I could try mapping to the "start game" button

Finished wiring game controls, testing of the controller went well.

Still lots to do:
Power to cabinet
More cable management
Proper backglass
Surround for the 39" flatscreen
Proper cabinet glass
Source and install coin mechs
Power for coin return lamps

I got a new idea for the backbox that I think will look good. Will try to get that together when i have time ...hopefully this week.

Damn I don't have a launch button :(  I am now realizing that there doesn't seem to be a way around having a launch button.  Any ideas?  And how do you map more than one thing to any one button I can't seem to do it in FP will only allow one function per joystick button.  I ended up using that "spare" button as power buttons for my PC

A lot of measuring, cutting, routering (routing?), and sanding... and painting. And done!

The back box is most of the way there need to touch up some paint on the cabinet in the corner seems but I am very happy with this.

Filling in the gaps around the playfield.  I was thinking it might be nice to have a "fire" button on the filler piece just above the breaker bar but then I would have to get a hole drilled in the glass.
I am considering using this plexi/lexan. (I dont know what it is I found it in my garage left behind by the previous home owner

Any opinions? Advice?  How to cut this and if I can get a 1-1/8" button hole in it without cracking it

Cheers.

Not sure where you live Lowe's or home Depot will cut it for you or find a table saw and use a finishing blade to cut the hole use a step down drill bit (Google)
