Going into my cell phone mini. I've seen steel wire ties used, I've seen glue ... was going to use the 5mm mdf for the cp but am open to other suggestions.

Since it's fairly thick, I'd make the part it mounts into the same thickness then cut the opening just big enough so it fits in there tight.
Either by filing the wood until it fits or 3D printing the part.
Then maybe a dab of superglue on the back edge that could be cut through if it needed to be removed.

As you mentioned, here is the lockwire method for mounting the Grayhill 04a joystick.

If you have a dremel drill press with an X-Y table, access to a CNC, or a 3D printer you could use the approach that Yvan256 used here.

Badmouth: I'll think about it. You'd have to be real precise with that cut to rely mostly on friction for that. I'd be afraid to use it too hard.

I would drill a shallow counterbore in the underside of the CP, chisel it square to get as close a fit to the base as possible, then hot glue the sucker.

was going to suggest hot glue. glad i'm not the only one. ;D

Got an idea. Going to use one of these laminate samples and cut a mounting plate out of it. Very thin layer of hot glue to secure to the top of the joy base, and size to the top of the cp. Super thin so the short staff of the stick isn't hindered. Cover all with printed artwork. There is no bottom to the cp, else I'd try to sit it on there.
