I'm looking to build a new cab (probably a tully) with a vertical crt monitor and a four way stick. I know similar questions have been asked but I can't find what I am looking for.
Can anyone think of any games worth playing that use more than 1 button with a vertical monitor and a 4 way stick?

Phoenix
-
Ok that makes one. Any more that I would miss out on if I use one button?
-
you could always double up and map buttons 2 and 3 to start 1 and 2
-
don't forget, since you have a 4-way, it is good also for 2-way games like Satan's Hollow and many more.

4-way games that use 2 buttons:
Dig Dug II
Satan's Hollow
Son of Phoenix (technically 8-way but works fine)
Super Cobra
Honorable mention:
Punchout looks great on a vertical cab (puts both monitors on the vertical screen). 3 button game. (Left hook, Right hook, Uppercut). On my cab I on have 2 buttons so I map uppercut (button 3) to the player 2 button.
Also, are you going to run any horizontal 4-way classics on there? I did on my vertical cab. They look pretty decent.
Zookeeper (only uses 1 button but it's a fave of mine).
Elevator Action (jump, fire)

Half the games you just mentioned there as 4-way are 8-way. Zookeeper, Super Cobra, Son of Phoenix are all 8-way.
The answer to the number of buttons question is 2.
Here is my hand made list of all the vertical 4-way/2-way games in mame. It is extremely old, but I doubt anything of substance has been added to this list.

Thanks guys. I think I might go with 2 buttons, now I just need a theme (not a multicade theme) and some wood. I guess I need to find a monitor as well. It's hard to find a crt monitor that isn't super small around here.
Does anyone here use a crt tv as a monitor? If so how well does it look? And does it defeat the purpose of using crt?
I've always stuck with lcd screens and 8 ways so I feel like a noon again trying to go this route.

I use real arcade monitors in my real games and VGA crt monitors in my Mame setups. If you ask around to everyone you know the chances are good that you can score an old 21" VGA monitor for free or close to it.

I have seen them at thrift stores in the past for like 5 bucks, but when I go looking for something I can't find what I want.

That's a great list from Paige - I'll be using that as a basis for my next cab.
I think Commando is 8 way tho?

Not the one you are thinking of, different game with the same name.

That's pretty cool - i had no idea that existed!
Only game i don't see on the list is pacmania. I know a lot of people don't like it but I've always had a lot of love for it.

Nope. It's 8-way.

Added to the list. Mame probably listed it as 8-way back then and I didn't go up to 1987 in going over everything by hand since the vertical 4-way genre was over by then.

Curious as to what 4-way stick you're thinking of using.

Curious as to what 4-way stick you're thinking of using.
I always recommend using these, they just seem to work well with pretty much all 4-way games.

I also like these because you can leave the mounting nut just a little bit loose so you can rotate the base to play QBert.

Original Pac-Man sticks are also good, but a little hard to find and should probably be saved for real or reproduction cabinets at this point.
While I love Wico sticks, I don't like the 4-way ones as an overall 4-way stick, I don't like the way they perform in fast maze games.

Haven't decided yet. I like what paigeoliver suggested. I was looking at this as well

I recently purchased the cheaper 4-way leaf switch from ggg just to get my feet wet. I'm liking it just fine. I'd imagine the pac-pro would be great too. I love those leaf switches.

Pac-Pro is just an upgraded version of the one I normally suggest anyway, so I feel good about blindly recommending it.

I have had four pac-pros and I highly recommend them.
Just keep in mind the PacPro is designed for metal control panels.

I was asking because I ran across another thread that was recommending the Pac-Pro over the Leaf-Pro. (Might have even included DL as part of the convo.)
I'm in the same boat - looking for an undermount solution for a 1/2" MDF CP. Was otherwise looking at modding a Sanwa JLW with microleafs or something.

Pac-Pro or GTFO
