Title: Round Joystick Restrictors
Post by: KLRinstinct on February 13, 2017, 08:27:50 am

Has anyone here had any experience with these kind of round restrictor joysticks. In particularly with fighting games?
Any input appreciated. Having real trouble making my mind up here. Will be playing a lot of Street Fighter and the like.

They work well with things like street fighter where you roll the stick from back to down to forward etc.
Some people prefer the octagonal but thats a personal pref thing.

I prefer octagonal. I like to feel the cardinals and diagonals.

I like the round for certain games that require lots of sweeping motions: Robotron, SmashTV, Berserk. Shmups are *ok* with them, but the problem is sometimes you need precision movements especially on the diagonals, so having a physical "notch" to guide you can be helpful. But of course everyone's preference is different.
Octo-gates are my preference for most games that are 8-way. Square-gates are mainly a fighting game norm, but the added benefit especially with a JLF is that you get the option of turning the restrictor to 4-way (diamond).

I like round restrictors. Especially if you're not going to have 4/8 way switching.
On the 4-way games, they don't feel as wrong as a square restrictor.

I had octagonal gates for a while, but got tired of the bumpity-bump of riding the gate when doing sweeping motions in fighting games.
They do train you to hit the directions more precisely.
You don't realize how far off your motion is until you use an octagonal gate and the gate has to guide you in.

That's interesting stuff, thanks guys. Yeah I was thinking sometimes it might be good to have the diagonals too.. With some of the hold back- push forward moves in street fighter etc it is good to be able to actually hold down-back instead. Also for top down view type games and 2d shooter being able to hold a diagonal well could be nice. Really wish I could test some of these myself.  I guess if your making the right qtr circle motion with the stick you wouldn't be snagging the corners?

If I were you I'd go with a genuine Sanwa JLF.  That way you can easily swap out the restrictor type pretty painlessly.  They you can try them and see what you need.

Here's an example, you just need to press down and twist to get the default one out of there:

^ there is also a 2-way restrictor.

Same with the Seimitsu LS-32. Between these sticks there are a lot of gate options.

Awesome, thanks for that. Yeah in my early researching The JLF was at the top of my list there. Didn't know about the restrictor options though. I'll give them a go.

I have the 8-way restrictor... I like it because it really helps you hit the right moves in street fighter (especially if you are a sloppy player). But the only draw back is that you feel it and it is a bit distracting. Get both... I think you'll like the 8-way and then graduate to the circular restrictor (which plays faster).
