Hi arcade enthusiasts!
My name is Matt Sayer, and I'm a games journalist writing an article about people who build or buy arcade cabinets not just to play classic games, but for various modern games too. I find the notion of playing the latest fighting games and throwback rogue-likes on a home cabinet incredibly fascinating, and I'd love to discuss with you how you got into it and how it differs from traditional PC/console gaming. If you can spare some time to answer a few questions over email/private message, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to chatting with you all!
Regards,
- Matt

One example that springs to mind is Rodney's MKX build.

Mainstream titles generally are analog and won't work, but I enjoy titles like VVVVVV on my cabinet.

Great! Would you mind if I sent you some questions via private message, Paige?

secrecy and intrigue. ::)

I have my cabinet setup with some old school PC games like Quake, Quake III, HydroThunder and they just never get played.
Just not very compatible with joysticks even though I have tinkered around with the settings quite a bit.

Only if those games play well with arcade controls. There are some good games out there that are fun on a cab. You just need to find them. Check the sticky in the software section about this.

I have Steam on my cabinet. The Steam games are mostly limited to arcade style fighting games and shmups.
There are a few puzzle games and the occasional platformer like Limbo, but most modern games require analog sticks or an absurd number of buttons to control.
I don't actually play this stuff very often. I just like building it and getting it to work. :)

I have several PopCap games on my arcade (Bejeweled, Peggle, Feeding Frenzy, etc). They look and play excellent. Here's a photo of my (then 3) year old nephew playing on it.
When you play games that require a cursor (Bejeweled, for example), the trackball (which is normally used to play games such as Golden Tee or Bowling) acts as a mouse.

If ya want a real story about modern games in an arcade cabinet, the builds dedicated to new games are more interesting.....

My bartop is the fastest PC I have at the moment.
I took 10 minutes to build a keyboard/mouse pedestal that leans on the bartop.
I was playing COD3, Superhot, Counterstrike on there this weekend.

This thread was a love affair with that game. Good times. Fun to watch.

Great! Would you be up for answering some questions, Dan? If so, do you have an email I can send them to?

I have a short list of modern games on my cab, and periodically try to add a new one, but there aren't that many. The ones that tend to work best for me (I'm not into fighters) are arcade refreshes like DoDonPachi Resurrection, Refender, Ether Vapor, or Ikaruga. Championship Pac Man works pretty good; and then there are the "casual" games like VVVVVV, Hexagon, and Geometry Dash. The ones that get played the most are Geometry/Grid Wars and Pinball Arcade (although Visual Pinball is arguably a better simulation).
With all that said, I should note that most "modern" games just don't work well with an arcade machine control panel at all--and that even the ones above are compromises. 90% of the time I'm playing the classics, and the modern games are mostly there as curiosities. The formula for an arcade game is drop coin, press start, and play. Any deviation from that formula kind of goes against the whole point. I already have a PC and a console for complex and "deep" gaming. The arcade cab is for something else entirely.

That makes me want to do a new dedicated. Maybe towerfall or 30 seconds to die.

Nope, I do not, and I never will.

Thanks for your input so far, everyone! It's incredibly helpful :)

This is my 4 player arcade machine made specifically for modern 4 player PC party games like Towerfall, Gang Beasts, Pacman 256, Hidden In Plain Sight ect.. 95 percent PC games and a few emulated Gamecube games.

I have a ton of modern games on my cab, all played with Xbox360 controllers instead of my CP. since I got rid of my 360 (red ring) I decided to put as many PC ports as I could onto the cab to preserve them. At least until 360 emulation is available. Games I have include GTA, Assasssins Creed, Batmans, MK and SF, and a ton more that are cab friendly.
