I built a Vertical CRT MAME cab. It has a 4 way joystick, 3 buttons, and a trackball. It looks like a Burgertime machine. I have a STUN runner dedicated cab, and a Defender dedicated cab.
I want to build a horizontal oriented MAME cab that covers a lot of games without getting silly. I have a 25 inch multisync CRT monitor ready to go, and a nice PC setup on the way courtesy of Yots.
I was thinking of modeling this one after a Konami 4 player cabinet. Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa would be cool if I can find the artwork.
I would, however like to tweak the control panel a bit. I would like to put the 4 joysticks inline. That way I could play Robotron, Smash TV (my son's favorite), and other games that require 2 joysticks. I would also add more action buttons for P1 and P2 to cover more games.
This might involve expanding the control panel surface area a bit. I am going to look up the measurements and start playing with cardboard control panels. If it gets too big I will leave them as is and just add some buttons to p1 and p2.
I regularly host parties at my house and my little arcade gets lots of use from adults all the way down to three year olds. I think a 4 player cabinet would get plenty of use.
I am open to suggestions, and I actually mean that. ;)

Check out Malenko's Broad Street Bullies build.
-
Oh, and stay away from the aircraft carrier Kool-Aid. :)
-
That is the layout I was thinking of. That is a nice build. The only problem I see is the artwork is not Blackhawks. ;D
I checked out the Moo Mesa artwork and it is sucktacular. I will have to find an alternative. Maybe TMNT or the Simpsons.
-
I should have sawdust flying next weekend.
-
If Malenko sees this:
Is your Broad Street Bullies using a the standard NBA JAM control panel width?
If so was there enough shoulder room for 4 people?
Did it work out to line up the joysticks so Robotron, Smash TV, Total Carnage and other games could be played?
-
That's what I am looking for. Thanks.
-
The only thing I would change is player 1 and 2 should be in the middle and 3 and 4's on the edges.
-
I'd also angle the 3rd and 4th joysticks. Not because I think they need angled, but because I like to see BYOAC lose it's mind once in a while.
-
I could really throw gasoline on the fire and angle the joysticks plus throw a 60 in 1 in the machine. ;D
Unfortunately this build log shouldn't have too much entertainment value. It will be pretty straight forward.
I downloaded the DWG file for a Konami 4 player cabinet.
I just have to decide if I am going to use the artwork from one of those games, or come up with my own. I have no graphics or layout skills. I would have to come up with an idea and pay someone to execute it.
Any suggestions?

Got a present from Yotsuya. This will be the guts for my build.

Is there a tutorial somewhere for formatting images into my posts? Right now I am just using the attachments option. I see there is a forum thread to upload the pictures. This kind of stuff is pretty foreign to me, but I learn quickly.

Thank you. There are a lot of really helpful people here.

Make me proud, bro!
-
Bought plywood tonight. Sawdust will be flying tomorrow, but I am still unsure of what direction to go in for artwork.
-
Nothing terribly interesting yet. I have one plywood sheet cut down. That provided most of the parts aside from the 2 side panels.

This machine is going to be my catch-all machine. I want to play a wide variety of games on it. What do people recommend for a good all purpose 8 way stick?
It doesn't need to play 4 way games at all. I have a cab for that already.

Thanks.

Can't go wrong with a street fighter layout. Or a 4 Button neo geo layout.
-
It's a 4 player machine. I figure I would go with the 6 button layout for p1 and p2. I am going to use the more ergonomic 6 button layout. P3 and p4 would get 2 or 3 buttons each.
-
If your a fighter fan JLF's with oct gate most fighter lovers go for.
-
Thanks. A couple of my friends are fans, but not me so much. I will have to weigh that in my decision.
-
Or get a round gate to, bit smoother and easy to change ;)

I need artwork. I am not a big fan of the art for any of the Konami 4 player games. What if I combined two of them?
Take the X Men cabinet and draw all of the characters in the style of the Simpsons.
Is there an artist here that would want to tackle something like that? I am not a cheapskate. I know artistic talent is often undervalued.
Is this a brilliant idea, or does it just sound good in my head?
-
Thanks. I will do that.
-
I loved the idea, so I did some looking.

Lots of stuff out there. I still love it, but I'm not IN love with it...
-
I'm not 100% sure who all those characters are, but there was definitely artwork of the X-men in the Simpsons style. Found this video searching around:

I liked this one

Enh.... you can do better.
-
That is the spirit of what I am looking for.
I PM'd Opt2Not. If I am going to do this, I don't want to hack together a bunch of graphics. Some people can do that successfully. I cannot.
I want it done by an artist in a cohesive manner.
I don't have the artistic ability or the digital art skills to pull it off.
-
This particular project is going to be on hold for a little while. I contacted Opt2Not on the advice of Malenko. He will be formulating all the artwork for my cab. His services are booked for several months so this project is being deprioritized until the artwork completion is imminent. I am in no hurry. The artwork is going to be awesome.
Thanks for the advice Malenko.

Opt does quality work. You won't be sorry.

Now I have to figure out which cab to build right now. I bought 2 19 inch CRTs. I would like to build a vertical SHMUP. I also have a Championship Sprint control panel and a Road Blasters control panel. So I have a few choices.
-
Back from hiatus.
I am picking up a Konami 4 player cab this afternoon. It is a little beat up, but not terrible. It has no artwork, but it has the coindoors and mechs. The control panel is hacked up. I think someone MAME'd it at one point. There is a monitor in it of unknown condition. All of the wiring is in place. This will be perfect for what I want to do so this project is ready to move forward.
I am going to keep this wired for JAMMA.
It will run MAME and PCBs.
It will have the standard joystick layout for Konami 4p cabinets. P1 and P2 will have a 7 button layout. P3 and P4 will have 4 buttons. I actually like the Dungeons and Dragons games that use 4 buttons.
I am working with an artist on an artwork package for the machine.
-
sucktacular.
Rep for rockin' that term.

Not even Crime Fighters?
