Hey all, I'm curious to see what people think would be the best option for a insert coin button. Basically I already have the hardware, just curious how it should get designed.
Here's the lowdown:
It's a 4 player cab (obviously with 4 dedicated player start buttons on the cp), I also have a "fake" coin door that I rigged with microswitches so now the coin return button is now the insert coin button. The issue I'm running through my head is my coin door has two button returns, and 4 player start.
So here's the million dollar question: Should I have it set up so either button will insert coins for all players? Or the left coin return will insert coins for the left two players and the right button for the right two players. (Or any other ideas)
I know this sounds stupid and trivial, but when I'm going on my 4th year of building this thing and now it's almost done, every little detail counts!!!

You will have issues with games like gauntlet and the simpsons.

You could just use the coin door to coin up players one and two and give three and four a shifted function to coin up. Most of the time it will be only P1 and P2 anyways. I don't know how it would work with giving the left return p1 and p3 coins and the right giving p2 and p4 coins.

I think It really depends what games and emulators you are running.
Some games TMNT on mame for instance will allow any player to start with any coin input (i think you may want to double check)
But some other games and emus require individual coin inputs for individual players.
Best thing to do is load up the games you want to play and see how they react.

I ran into this with Gauntlet I/II and just went to shifted function to get around it.

So, even if I go into the mame setting for that specific game, and let's say my coin insert button is mapped as say the letter c, and I go in and change all four coin insert buttons to the letter c, if I hit the coin button then wouldn't it just give a credit to all 4 players? Or am I off in thinking that would work?
Another thought, I have the ipac 4, could I just run a set of wires from the button to both of the inputs so when the button is pressed it signals both the player 1 coin and player 3 coin? They'll have different mappings in mame then.

I'll test that for you right now, back in 5 min
Edit: Yes that words fine. I just tested it in Gauntlet II on this computer and with both coin 1 and 2 set to "key 5" both coin up with no problem.

Right. So if you want to play it one player, you're screwed.

Unless you go changing options for individual games etc which is more hassle than its worth.
So yeah your better off with 4 inputs otherwise you have problems either way.

On the machine out in the workshop coin one is:
start + player one, button one. (code 5)
For 2 player coin two it is:
start + player two, button one. (code 6)
Easy to program shifted button function.

I'm just saying, if you're going to make a 4-player panel, four extra buttons for coining up is probably the way to go. People have done that on their panels for the longest time and it doesn't look out of the ordinary. Why complicate things?
