Title: Pi 3 light gun Retropie support
Post by: juxtapoz15 on January 20, 2017, 11:37:00 am
Has anyone been able to get a light gun to work on a Pi running RetroPie?  I was hoping to run a Pi on my one arcade cabinet instead of a dedicated PC with MAME.

Not tried either, but I think without a hell of alot of programming skills the answer would be no sadly.
They would need special drivers etc making I would think.

You'll need a CRT for the older style guns... the ones that flash. Potentially your best bet would be some kind of bluetooth or IR thing (like a wiimote, or remote mouse). But then... fraught with unknowns. I have an early Act-labs gun, but I haven't tried it out on the Pi yet.

I have the AimTrack light guns working with the Pi. https://www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html (https://www.ultimarc.com/aimtrak.html)

They are just seen as additional mice so works fine. The only thing is the calibration is held on the device itself (it works like a wiimote) and the calibration software is written for windows. So might want to setup the guns on a windows machine first (given they use an LED bar for point of reference, they are very sensitive to distance. So best get them setup to the exact distance you plan on using them from) then they should be accurate enough on linux/retropie/mame etc.

possible with aimtrak light guns and possibly others I haven't tried.

That looks horrible, I hate magic wand controls.

Alright sheriff Jim..  Is there a way to smooth out the jitteriness? Or is pc the only way?

once aimtrak is calibrated, it's really accurate, so you can hide the crosshair(and then don't care about the jitteriness)

You've got two options.  Use a CRT and a CRT compatible light gun (arcade games), or use a Wii and play games designed for the magic wand.  I've wasted a considerable amount of effort on this and quickly realized that the games are tweaked to work better with their respective native inputs.  Basically, the CRT games tend to put targets on the edges of the screen, and the LED/Camera ones put things towards the center.  Decide what you want to play and build out accordingly.

I use the topgun with the xbox on the arcade cab I am working on.  I'll see if the raspi works as a mouse on Retropie, but I think I will need to figure out the linux drivers with raspian.  I am thinking it would depend on calibration.

Anyone else still have the EMS Topguns?
