Title: Single-player experience on multi-player cab?
Post by: MISteve on January 08, 2017, 09:55:59 pm
I'm contemplating a new build...got a question about multi-player cabs.  With the controls spaced out on the wide CP, how is the single-player experience?  Do you ever feel like you're standing off to one side playing and not right in the game?   Sorry if this has been asked before, I've been googling steadily over the weekend and haven't come across anything  :banghead:

Well..considering all 2 player games were probably all 2 player button layouts... 2 player games have been played like this since the dawn of 2 player arcade games. (Facts not guaranteed). But in all seriousness  The single player experience is fine of course considering your control panel is proportionate to your cabinet. Meaning some people build gigantic monster control panels on an old cab that might have a small CRT monitor.  But like I said think about a streetfighter or Mortal Kombat, NBA jam, or Any two player game ever made. You were always standing at an offset you're good to go :)

You don't have to use P1 controls. Just setup single player/controller games to use the most centrally mounted stick & buttons.

P1 is the most central along with P2 usually?

True. I actually use P2 controls for games like Pac-Man. I just got the impression the OP wanted 3-4 player CP (hence wide), with P1 on the far left, or something.  :dunno

I got a 2 player cabinet and map both joysticks and buttons to player 1.

That way I can use whatever feels best for the game (sometimes I use player 2 joystick with player 1 buttons)

In mame it is easy to just create a game.ini with another .ctrlr file for two player games.

That sounds like a lot of work lol

I aint picky usually, I just play normal I guess stick in left and buttons with right lol.

I'm weird about this.  Pacman/MsPacman just feels wrong if the joystick is too far off to the side and I can't grab the side of the cab with my left hand at about shoulder level.

On my own cab I made a sliding CP utilizing T-Track from a woodworking supply website.

A nice bonus is that it reveals a cupholder that fits a pint glass real well.

Arrange your 4 player panel like this and your question is a non-issue

3  1  2  4

I really need to take a better "in-use" pic since the cab is pseudo-finished.

Thanks for the help, everyone.  Looks like I had a basic misunderstanding of how multi-player CPs are set up...wouldn't be the first time... I'm still very early in the planning stages, this gives me stuff to think about - especially that cup holder, BadMouth.  :applaud:
