Title: First build - finally (pretty much) done
Post by: usaf-lt-g on December 20, 2016, 10:33:46 am
Well, let me first say, I realize there's a bunch of guys who "frown" on MAME cabinets vs originals but for someone like me who wants one machine to rule them all in his basement for "light" use gameplay.... A MAME machine was exactly what I needed.

This is / was my first cabinet restore / remake.

I started with a heavily used and damaged original MIDWAY Super High Impact cabinet. I put industrial casters on the bottom, re-did all the electrical on it, bondo'ed it, resanded it, primed it, painted it, re-wired it, Designed and CNC'd a custom control panel, designed custom Galaga graphics, new marquee, new LED lighting, new speakers and subwoofer, wired an original on-off switch next to a "shut down button", new t-molding, new plexi, new just about everything, painted it, and applied the custom graphics (including the very tedious and tough coin door).

I will caveat that I am still wiring the control panel to completion (I have a power point I need to work on for work, so I took a break :) ).

ORIGINAL CONTROL PANEL - this was junky... Controls didn't work. Wiring was shoddy.

ROUND 1 - of just trying to get the ORIGNAL control panel working in the original all messed up cabinet. This is BEFORE I re-did the appearance of the cabinet or re-did the entire control panel.

NEW Control Panel I designed, CNC'd with a PLEXI top

In any case. I am thoroughly impressed in how it ultimately turned out "appearance" wise. Now it's a matter of finishing the wiring the programming, and the LED scripting. This thing better be operational by the time Christmas gets here....

One of the best 4 players I've seen, not overly huge. Great job!

Interesting that you have a 4-player machine with a vertical screen.

I am curious about that as well.

So originally I wanted to put in a horizontal screen, but honestly, most of the games people will be playing are scrollers or 1-2 players. In the event 4 players are needed, I've found that the bezel screen orientation really don't impede on players 3 and 4.

Looks really nice!

Also, you must not be a golden tee player, as that spinner is right in the way of that gameplay.  If you don't play it, then no worries.  Great style, imho.

Actually I am a golden tee player :) and I gave much thought to the whole spinner vs trackball. And virtually everyone I know who plays golden tee, uses the 2 thumb method vs the whole Palm. However I did myself try the whole Palm on the thing, and did not find it that cumbersome despite the spinner being positioned in front of it. But again, as I said, 2 thumb method vs whole Palm is my preferred playing style anyways lol :)

Right on. To each their own. I'm a "full swing" and follow through type of GT player, haha.

What's your thoughts on those buttons? I bought'em, tried to use them, and learned I really prefer convex buttons.

Nice Job!

I am a big fan of old cabinet refurbs when a cabinet is now worth or beyond restoration, and instead of it being tossed, someone gives it a new lease.

These style cabs are some of my favourite shaped ones, and the art of games like Galaga, Space Invaders and Centipede are timeless.

If you could put a number on it, what would you say your ratio of vertical to horizontal gameplay is?
