Title: Joystick retaining clip question...
Post by: JamesS on January 22, 2004, 08:57:48 am
Well I seem to have lost the retaining clip from a joystick I own, a super.

Can you get something that would work as well at a hardware store like Home depot?  Or do I need to buy a brand new Joystick?

Thanks for any help.

Its a C-clip most hardware stores or automotive stores should sell the one you need. Just bring another one in with you to compare it to so that you get the right one.

The retaining ring shipped with a Happ Super is technically an 8mm e-clip.  The "c-clip" style retaining rings don't have the middle nub on them.

The grooves on the Happ Super and Comp are overcut, which results in having to use an 8mm e-clip instead of the "correct" 10mm e-clip.  Because of the extra-deep groove, a c-clip probably doesn't have a wide enough shoulder to withstand the force of a joystick in use.

Thanks Oscar.

Will I be able to get one at Home Depot or Lowes, or will I have to try something different?

I would try a local hardware store first, then a Home Depot/Lowes, and finally an automotive store if the first two didn't pan out.  Any Ace or TruValue hardware store should carry 8mm e-clips.

Thanks again, there is an Ace on the way home from work for me.  So I will check there this afternoon.

If I remember correctly, I think the e-ring for the joysticks are 3/8" size.

You are probably thinking of the Wico joysticks, which used 3/8" e-clips.

A 3/8" e-clip will fit in the groove of the Happ/IL joysticks, but it is a pretty loose & sloppy fit because the groove diameter on the shaft is too small.

Well the ACE on the way home was a wash.  No metric e-clips.

Gonna look for an ace close to work here and a tru-value.

Thanks again Oscar.

When I was searching for one I found one in a local gearbox / clutch shop.

If you can, just pull one off another stick and take it in to compare.  I'm sure you can find an imperial equivalent to the metric size.

The wealth of knowledge around here never ceases to amaze me!

I ended up with a 5/16th, nobody had metric e-clips close to me.  It was a tight fit, but I got it on there, and it is working like a charm.

This is just for general knowledge if anyone else has the same problem as I.
