Title: Fix flipped screen?
Post by: Hektik on January 21, 2004, 10:56:41 pm
I found an unbelievable deal for a classic arcade cabinet. The only thing is...the screen is flipped and the buttons are non-responsive. If i were to buy it, would it be easy to fix? If anyone knows what could be wrong please let me know :) he might sell soon.

btw its not just the cabinet, it has the game and all :D

I'm no expert but I have flipped a tv screen before (don't ask), that said, I'm pretty sure that can be solved with switching a couple of wires. Red/Blue, Yellow/Green,  ??? can't remember which ones...

What do you consider an unbeleiveable deal? What game is it?
Flipping the screen over is easy, I believe you have to swap the yellow and green wires going to the neck tube from the chassis. Fixing a buttons or two shouldn't be hard. If it's a classic game, it probably uses leaf switchs, Sometimes these require a little care and feeding to get working right.

Some game boards have dipswitches to set to flip the image.

Thanks =D

So now that I can fix the monitor, are there any sites that explain how to fix the buttons? Could it be that the wires just aren't connected, or bad? And can they be easily replaced? Oh and 1 more thing...50 dollars is a good deal isn't it? Thanks for the feedback

Sounds like a deal to me, but I'm no expert.

$50 is a good deal even if you can not fix the screen.  A nice working arkanoid spinner can go for a good price on Ebay, not to mention you have a working monitor, etc...

Anyway, I had a Popeye arcade machine which I got for $50 because the screen was flipped.   I followed someone's directions about swapping colored wires on the monitor yoke and it worked.   Although in a couple of weeks the monitor display was flipped again ... meaning that there was a true problem which was causing the flipping that still had to be addressed.    I decided to sell it for $250 instead of fixing it again.  Anyway, point is that you can flip the display by changing the correct monitor yoke wires but the true problem as to why the monitor display was flipped in the first place still exists (ie: no one decides to flip the yoke wires to get the display to flip, so you can almost gurantee that the monitor yoke wires are correctly wired and another problem exists somewhere else).

BTW:  Dont mean to intrude here in this post, but why would a dip switch exist to flip a screen upside down?  I was first thinking that it had to do something with 2-player cocktail mode gameplay, but that does not seem correct since there would be no way to flip in back for the other player to play normal.

There are dip switches for cocktail mode, but most of the game boards I have also have a "flip monitor" dip.  This is so that you can mount the monitor any old way (i.e. upside down) and not have to fix it once you figure it out. Instead of messing with the monitor, one quick flip does it.  The PCB's don't all use the same standard for what is up, I guess.

My monitor chassis has 2 sets of pins for the output to the monitor.  Depending on which set you choose you get either right way up or flipped.  As Rocky said, I assumed it was so you could just mount the monitor whichever way you like (so the flyback is in a convenient position for example) and then worry about it.
