Title: Steering wheel/Shifter/pedals
Post by: Brad Lee on January 21, 2004, 09:18:34 am
So I picked up a steering wheel assembly(pulled from a cabinet, not a pc/usb/console jobbie) and will be using it for its own swappable panel.

What Im really wondering is about shifters and pedals. Is there any where that a list is compiled of what games use which shifter? I know there are several types:
2 position, return to center
2 position, high or low
4 position like a real car
multi position in-line

I dont have any specific games in mind, obviously pole poistion, outrun, superprint, ironman stewart, and the rest of the classics. Im not too worried about Cruis'n and the like as Im woefully underpowered for that(right now anyway)

Same goes for pedals- is there a list of how many pedals, and if theyre digital or analog

As far as the wheel goes, seems like games either havea 270' spin or go all the way around with no stops. In the gameinfo derived from mame, is there a way o tell which is which? I think I remember that a "dial" is the 360', and "paddle" is 270', but I havent checked it out much

Finally any recommendations on shifter / pedal setups would be greatly appreciated

It's tricky to say which games use shifters / pedals without loading them up and looking.  The controls.dat project will be able to help with this in the future tho...

You're right, 360deg wheel games are classed as 'dial', 270deg wheel games classed as 'paddle' or 'stick'.

I think U_Rebel may have a list of games 270 deg & 360 deg (for v0.6?) at his site - have a look.  There are roughly the same no. of each IIRC.

Personally I'm going for 2 analog pedals, this covers most drivers since they can be used for digital too, and only a few use clutch - these games can be set to auto anyway (or use a button for clutch if you're bothered).  Then I'm having one 360deg panel with turbo shifter, and a 270deg wheel (or maybe yoke) panel with turbo shifter.  Again I'm not too bothered about the drivers that use 4 speed shifts...
