So my second joystick works fine in all the other games I've tried (Mario Bros, Track & Field, X-men, 1943) but it just doesn't register in Smash TV. Interestingly, the coin and start buttons for player 2 do function, but nothing else does. Player 1 controls function perfectly.
Does Smash TV have a weird control layout?
I'm using Mame4All 0.37b5.

HAve you tried going into the tab controls and setting the Input (this machine) settings ?
Smash TV is a dual joystick game for 1 player -- ie. the one joystick controls movement and the other shooting direction so would need 4 joys for 2 player !!

I have player 1 set up to use the joystick for movement and 4 buttons for shooting. Player 2 is exactly the same. I've tried remapping all of the available controls to the joystick and nothing responds. I know the joystick works because I can map the player 2 joystick to the player 1 controls and it works fine.

Map player 1 joystick 1 to directions and player 1 joystick 2 to the buttons and it should work.
Same goes for player 2 joystick 1 directions, player 2 joystick 2 to the buttons.

I think that's how I have it. Player 1 joystick is movement and my four buttons control shooting. Player 1 works fine. Player 2 is mapped the same only for player 2 controls and I get no response.
Does it maybe have something to do with running through Retroarch?

Ok I figured it out. Looks like the Libretro Mam4All build for Retropie doesn't play well with Smash TV so I changed the emulator to the regular Mame4All version and it's working great now!
