The sticks on my candy cabinet favor the diagonals so much that it renders a lot of games unplayable.
Can someone recommend a Japanese style stick that has a circular movement pattern, can be switched to 4-way and doesn't favor the corners. Preferably a cheaper one (I do not play fighting games, so I don't really need the top of the line Sanwa).

Tried the Happ comps? :p

If Happ sticks fit the machine then it would have had Wicos in it a long time ago (and Supers are my favorite cheap happ stick). I don't want to mess up the machine by redrilling it, so it has to have Asian style sticks.

Adapter plates?
Otherwise just throw on Zippyys and call it good

Can you point me to a specific link and model to purchase.

Yep they a bit spendy though.

I think paradise has em too if you don't need them anytime soon

What's in there now? Circular restrictors might be enough to make them good all-arounders.
Circular movement and 4-way switchability is a tall order.

Oh, I can't use those. My panel has long studs.
The current sticks are labeled JyueeAng and JAPCB002
They look like they could take a separate restrictor plate, but there aren't any there.

Could you not make some adapter plates out of Sheet Steel?
If that is not a option can you provide the dimensions for the mountings of the sticks you have now.
All the 4 way easy switchable sticks I know of are square restrictor though.
Unless you are not bothered about a easy change and you get multiple restrictors?
Or just for a extra thought how about a hex restrictor instead?

Problem is the mounting bolts will hit the joystick with their length.
I say a pair of knockoff JLFs from Randy, only problem with round or hexagonal gates is the 4 way functionality.
I'm sure he doesn't want to switch out restriction every time he gets the urge to play PacMan.... but you'd think with all his cabinets 4 way wouldn't be needed on this machine but I'm sure he has his reasons.

Indeed but I would say hex is better than round for 4 way/8way use without a dedicated restrictor (Just my opinion) but I would agree with the JLFs.
The other thing is get one of those above panel 4way/8way restrictor plates but again you may have mounting/astetic issues.
Other than that the only easy switch ones I know of are the Mag stick, J stick and omni 2.
But they all have square restrictors.
I remember seeing one a while ago when I was looking (cant remember the name though) that had built in lever for changing that came through the panel but you would obv have to cut the panel out to allow for the little lever.
Then the servo stick but I wouldnt call them cheap lol

I don't need easy 4-way switching, I just need 4-way switching. The cabinet doesn't run Mame, I use real boards in it and every once in a while one of those boards will be 4-way.

Ide go for the JLF then Paige, Circular, 4 way, hex, 2 way and pretty much any other gate you could ever want or need.

Not cheapish, but I like the Sanwa JLW for 4-way games and a round restrictor is available for it:
http://paradisearcadeshop.com/gates/1103-sanwa-gt-o-circle-restrictor-plate.html?search_query=circle&results=18 (http://paradisearcadeshop.com/gates/1103-sanwa-gt-o-circle-restrictor-plate.html?search_query=circle&results=18)
For cheapish ($9), maybe the zippy sticks:
http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=371 (http://groovygamegear.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=371)
The description says "The restrictor can also be removed completely for 8-way mode, which gives it a more rounded feel."
I haven't used them myself. The area underneath the restrictor looks square to me.
Maybe someone who has used zippy's can comment on the motion without a restrictor plate?

If you decide to go with JLFs but want cheaper then it's hard to beat the Chinese JLF copies. I have 6 genuine JLFs and 2 copies. The copies are 99% identical. I'm more than happy leaving them on one of my cabs. You lose the sanwa branding and get different microswitches on the PCB (very very slightly less force to actuate than on the genuine JLFs). Every other part is indistinguishable and completely interchangeable. The only issue is all copies may not be made the same so your experience may differ.

groovygamegear's JLF knockoffs aren't switchable between 4 & 8 way.
They don't have the rotate-able round part in the middle of the restrictor like real JLFs.
I used a set in upgrading my nephew's cab to 2-player.
I've forgotten all the differences, but the parts weren't as interchangeable as I thought they'd be.

Zippyys aren't great at four way but are serviceable if you mod the restrictor from a cross shape to a diamond shape.
Griffamaximus did this in one build thread but I don't remember which.

JLF does not work correctly on 4way
it does not matter whether it is a copy of the original
still have diagonal
any copy JLF (beyond ASCII) does not work as JLF
all have worse center possition and dynamcis, many pcs take blocks on spring and they are unplayable
