Todo:
-Control panel (Will be a dock of sorts for my sticks already made)
-Filler and sanding where needed
-Cut front door in half
-Paint
-Mount front door and backside door
-Add hardware (92mm Intake fans, 120mm exhaust fans, door handles, lighting)
-Speaker mounting
More will come im sure.
-
You cut some boards, I like you already.
-
Yessir! No CNC machine here. All cut by hand, hence so crooked.... ;D
-
No matter how you do it, cutting boards is a refreshing change of pace.
-
I did the same few years ago No CNC also

So far im happy with the results given I dont have much woodworking skill nor tools to make it look like most I see on here. Trying to come up with a color scheme as I want something a bit universal as far as the cabinet so that I can rely mainly on the dockable sticks for customized colors.
-
Man that hinge setup looks dangerous, those 9 screws could easily be stripped out and the cp hit the floor.
And you had me until you put fight sticks in it........i'm sad, so so sad now :'(
-
Nice build! I agree with the sentiment above--MDF is not known for its pull out resistance and after two adults put their weight on that panel, those screws will give--slowly at first then all at once. I would install a brace or bracket on the sides that's removable that could take the weight off those hinges.
I love the fold up design though--clever way to get the big bugger through doors.
-
Yea I hear ya both. That is what I was thinking I am going to have to deal with eventually even though the 2x4 placed underneath the top of the base is good for now to drill in the wood screws, this wont last. I was thinking either replacing the wood screws with machine screws and interlocking nuts to ensure the bolts stay in place. I also thought as @menace did and add some sort of bracket on the side but I think this would take away from the minimal look of the cabinet. I really didn't want to use the hinges at all but I really dont see much other choice.
Maybe something like this on the side, to take off some of the weight on the hinges?:

@rablack97
Not sure what else you expected to go in there except fightsticks?
-
either of you two have the plans for that?
-
Plans for what?
-
design diagrams and measurements for the cuts
-
My build is based off Donovan Myers, but slightly different as far as the CP and bigger scale to fit a larger TV. I think Donovans was for a 32" TV:
http://www.donovanmyers.com/arcade/x24VewlixPlans.pdf (http://www.donovanmyers.com/arcade/x24VewlixPlans.pdf)
-
awesome, thnx. The CP is a little questionable but everything else is tits
-
One of my pet peaves is to have someone with woodworking skills such as yourself, skimp on the control panel by tossing premade fightsticks in a scratch build.
why didnt you fabricate the cp and put the controls inside of that, plopping two fight sticks reminds me of the folks that put tanksticks in mamecabs and thought that was ok.
You were headed down the path of work of art and then went into the I rigged this up look.
:banghead:
-
I designed the CP in this fashion because I had already built the sticks myself.
http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/comment/10725418/#Comment_10725418 (http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/comment/10725418/#Comment_10725418)
My setup is mobile, hence the PC is not built into the cabinet itself, it has its own ITX casing and I can easily take the PC and the sticks with me to the living room or hook it up to my projector for outside events we have sometimes. Even though I built this cab I dont want my gaming experience confined to it. And I don't want to have to purchase 4 Brook PCB's when 2 will do (Those things aren't cheap). This cabinet is meant to be a shell of sorts for not only the PC but for consoles as well.
-
So you built this for your fight sticks?
Are you running xboxone, thats the only reason you would need the 90.00 Brooks board, you stated your using PC, why not use an IPAC 45.00 for 2 players.
Edit: You said PC and consoles, my mistake.
Still  for building around 2 fight sticks.
-
LOL, thanks for the support rablack. I appreciate your feedback, I do indeed plan on making some changes to the CP fastening but the concept stays. It fits my needs!
-
Props to Rablack97 for keeping it real, and props to atxscarface for taking it like a man and politely telling Rablack97 to ---fudgesicle--- off. Both sides showing how it should be done.
-
Very good job @atxscarface. I like a lot your CPO, are you OK to share it? Anyways, congrats ;)

If you have a 2x4 under the MDF--run some bolts through the hinges with washers on either side--much less chance of a pull out with a bolted connection versus wood screws--it still makes me nervous with it hanging out like that but if you are against undermount brackets, that might fill the need...
Just make sure that the 2x4 connects beyond the top plate (the piece the hinges screw into)--or else it'll likely just pop the whole top plate off.
-
its all tough love, just trying to help my man out here.......
Still hatin on them sticks though
-
Its all good man, hatas gonna hate! I knew not everyone had my type of taste when I posted this and Im sure you're not the last rablack, but again its all good when you can see past the cynical talk and take the criticism. Most of the time you guys mention or suggest improvements I would have never thought of. In this situation though youre asking me to change the entire concept of the CP which I don't have the time nor the funds to do so. So if the changes are minimal and I think it will help, definitely Ill take it into consideration. Anything else I just ignore (the beauty of forum talk!)
Ive seen some of your work rablack and its really good, very professional. However I don't have a CNC machine. :dunno
-
Agreed, man if you know me on the forum, i just like to to give folks a hard time, at the end of the day i just want to folks to build great things, which you are (cough were (sticks) sorry.
I like your design, and understand your reasoning.
I would definately go with a heavier gauge piano hinge though man. You have way too much overhang to support those 3 hinges already in place. Get one of these and paint it black.
-
Yeaah man! I was going to go for one of those and mount it on the underside of the CP routing a recess to fit that piano hinge flush against the bottom and use the hasp latches on the side to take some of the weight off. Please understand this project is not finished, I simply just couldnt wait to get it into the house and play on it a bit to get the feel and ensure I got the scale right. I did kind of rush the CP a bit but the concept is there, with your advice I have a better understanding how to get it more secure for the long run and with the underside mounting of the hinge it will look cleaner not seeing the hinges on the backside.
Overall though the CP is one piece, a major piece, but still one piece of the project that can always be modified and built on later if I feel the need. (Was thinking of fabricating a metal bracket with a rising motor for automated standup or sit down positioning) This project is for me and really just to see if I can do it, I have no intentions of selling this, until maybe rablack lets me borrow his CNC machine!! ;D Anyways it will be a bit before the next update, the kids and wife are starting to get jealous of me spending so much time in the garage!

This is a work of art and indeed a bit of inspiration came from here:

Platform for control panel is bolted down underneath with 2x4
Im pretty happy with the USB and cable runthrough, no cables are shown unless you lift the control panel.

Looks very nice. I reckon you could trim down the supporting shelf for the CP a little so it loses the angles. Great job though.
-
I did, I just didnt get a chance to take updated pics. I trimmed down the platform ends to sit flush with the bottom angle of the chamfer around the CP sides.
-
Excellent. Looking forward to seeing this finished and up and running. What colour scheme /artwork are you going for?
-
I was originally going for black and red, but I am honestly tired of that color scheme. I need it to match my office since that is where the cabinet is going to reside. Colors are Dark Gray (Black) with a lighter gray and white, my only thing is one set of buttons are red so I am debating just to throw those in there for now, or wait to purchase a new set of white buttons since gray seems to be hard to find or have in stock.

Need some help deciding:
1) Full Logos with Image
(https://s13.postimg.org/k3jxr8dmf/image.jpg)
2) No Logos with Image
(https://s11.postimg.org/jjqjml8nn/image.jpg)
3) Full Logos No Image
(https://s21.postimg.org/nn4rs4hef/image.jpg)
4) Vewlix Logo Only No Image
(https://s11.postimg.org/jirqdqhr7/image.jpg)
5) No Logos No Image
(https://s13.postimg.org/x8zfxc7hz/image.jpg)
-
Man I love that!
Personally I would go number 2 out of the ones you posted.
But if you can get the HORI logo to match the other 2 would prob look ok.
It just looks totally out of place.
-
My opinion, no Hori, No Chun Li, Maybe A Taito, I'm okay with Vewlix. Otherwise, looking good.
-
6th Option per @n3wt0n:
No Hori, No Chunli, Resized Taito logo
7th Option:
Resized Chunli image
(https://s22.postimg.org/rdls2cye9/image.jpg)
I really like the image but I dont want to overdo the minimal style known of the Vewlix cabs so I toned down the opacity to blend in with the steel background, but it really looked nice over the stripes.

-
I think she fitted better on the right.
-
8 ) My personal fav
(https://s16.postimg.org/rejmlervp/image.jpg)
-
Still pretty sure I would like it better without any character image but you dig it - I can respect that. It does look better than Chun Li in full force on the first ones but does #8 work with Chun Li flipped to face towards the buttons? She is pulling my attention to the right and away from the control panel as it sits now. Also, how does it look with the Taito logo placed between the black and white lines instead of sitting directly on the black line?
-
^ agree the original chun li fitted better and looked the right way
-
I'm with N3wt0n. I'd leave the characters off.
-
9)
10)
My plan is to take the 6th option with no images and only the vewlix and taito logo and make this the 2nd CP and the one with the character on P1 side:
Or I dont know, I might take a break from this until after the Thanksgiving holiday. Luckily I like the overall design enough to print with or without the characters.
-
No Characters.
-
Option 6. No characters. Looks sweet.
-
How about half way between 9 and 10. I like the opacity with the steel showing through, but size her somewhere between those two, closer to size of 1 and 2 but down lower and a little to the right.
-
Sticking with the minimalistic look and going with no characters. 2nd question, with or without stroke around the vewlix logo?

Bottom one

As brad808 says:
(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/09vze5z1iqg/maxresdefault.jpg) :laugh2:
thought of this part of the movie with that response for some reason.
Was thinking the same, ill save that extra stroke for the marquee. Happy Thanksgiving in the states btw!
-
Artwork finalized:
1. Marquee
2. Lightbar artwork
3. Bottom CP artwork
4. Main CP artwork

Looks good. Normally I'm never a fan of how people incorporate SF characters in their projects, but yours is tastefully done.

Done working on this for a bit, im expecting an order of fan guards for the back and will add LED lighting a bit later. Thanks rablack97 for calling me out on the first CP construction.
Also, changed the background image to the CP artwork as the original bright steel look did not mesh well with the sides. Went with a darker steel with its accented stripes flowing horizontal which better matches the line artwork for the vewlix style.
Tried my best with what I had, and I think it came out pretty decent. Ill title this thread completed once I add the LED lighting and fan guards. Ill try to post video gameplay if anyone is interested, but with all the professional projects going on here its getting hard out here for a brotha!
