I went to my sister's place who has an original Galaga machine (I drooled all over it) - I could not resist examining every bit of it. Anyhow, I ended up getting an all time best of 162300 - a score that I could not get on my own MAME machine. I can only get around 65K on it. Well, I believe its the fact that the orginal CAB has leaf switches - I got every ship on the challenging stages which I could not do on my MAME.
So here I am thinking that maybe I should switch over to Leaf Switches - for the sake that I love Galaga and other shooters like Asteroids, etc...maybe it's worth it.

If you notice it - do it! Wico 4 way is the way to go - it's what I have on my Galaga.
Besides being leaf switches, Galaga was a 2 way leaf switch, so maybe that kind of restriction helps your game.
Is it possible her difficulty was set lower than what you are playing at home, or you get more men, or fast shoot?

To me controls are always the most important part. We fret over displays and other issues of lesser importance, but for me the controls are always key and are the area people compromise too much.
Original Galaga stick is a lovely stick -- looser than a Wico. Love it for side-side games, but I've only got the one and it lives in my Galaga dedicated. Love my Wicos and that is a compromise that I see as reasonable (hence having Wicos in most of my other cabs).
Pac stick is another stick that I think outperforms the Wico (this time for maze games), but it isn't quite as big a difference.
