It has been over a year since I purchased a computer from a member on this site (Computer For Sale (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,133968.0.html)), and I think if I post the project , It will motivate me to get my dream arcade cabinet done. I have been inspired by so many of you on this site and I thank you for all of your help. Anyway here are the details.
The Computer I purchased
(http://www.cdecristo.net/Arcade/IMG_5571.jpg)

Upright cabinet
I5 CPU, 16 GB ram, 2 TB SSD , Windows 7 ,ATI Radeon 4350,
27" CRT
Hyperspin, Groovymame
2 Player control panel, trackball, spinner,
IL Pushbuttons with LEDs
28" stretch LCD Marquee
Happ Mini coin door
Inspiration
These are the projects that inspired me the most . There are many others as well, But these guys have inspired me and helped me as well.
blind_dado http://www.rdowney.com (http://www.rdowney.com) , This site has been where I go to almost daily for reference and inspiration on how to build my arcade cabinet. Robert has been a Huge help.
chancekj Flynns Arcade (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,135116.0.html,) Another huge inspiration, great help.
wp34 Tron Legacy (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,116519.0.html) Pretty much built the same cabinet as this one and he has been a huge help.
markc74 Blip (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,137295.msg1577372.html#msg1577372)
Pauly Ready Player One (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,146068.msg1519698.html#msg1519698)
Theme
This has been the biggest delay , It started as a Tron theme but I am not convinced I am going to keep it . The one problem I have is that Tron is a real game I think I want to create an original theme. I may do a similar theme but make it more generic.
Goals
I want to play the classic arcade games that I remember playing as a kid , using a big CRT running, using buttons that have LED lights, trackball, and spinner. I would really like a LCD Marquee, this is a game changer, but I am not sure i can get it done.
Hyperspin
I really like the layout and the Flash graphics in this Frontend. It has been very frustrating at times but I have it working nicely. I plan on running MAME, Daphne, Atari 2600, and 5200, Maybe Sega Genesis, But thats about it . I am not interested in playing Pinball, Playstation, Jaguar, WII, etc. Just the classics.
CRT
This has been tough , I started with a WG D9200 and after a few months , it failed. I bought a NOS Chassis and it turned out that the tube was bad. I then picked up a NOS WG D9800 , It is working well although it needs to be adjusted

Cabinet My Dad who is an expert woodworker is going to help build the cabinet with me . Without him I would not have Ben able to get it done . I will then paint, drill holes , install artwork, and install all the components.
Control Panel
Heavily inspired by blind_dado's Odyssey machine . I am not sure if I am going to have blue IL pushbuttons , or Clear IL pushbuttons so that the LEDS are not just blue but RGB . Another issue I need to decide soon.

Looks like a good start.
How are you getting a 15hrz single from the PC to the CRT? I have wanted to do a build with a real CRT arcade monitor for years. Hopefully when I move back to the US.
From my reading I plan on use a {url=https://www.ultimarc.com/jpac.html]jpac[/url] because it won't let a non 15hrz signal throw, protecting your monitor. It's Jamma for ease of use.
Good luck
-
Good start, now get it built! Lol
-
Looks like my post commenting on your use of the amazing D9800 was lost in the Great Server Outage of 2016. Very much looking forward to this build.
-
Well after going back and forth on if I would personally build the cabinet or not , after getting 2 very high estimates , My father and I are building the cabinet . This is the way it should be anyways , I was just concerned it would never get done but we made great progress in one day.
Got the wood, Mommmy i'm scared

Looking good so far. Have you gotten any further on a theme? Are you going to paint or laminate?
-
I am going to prime and paint it , I would like to do laminate , yours looks so good , I dont want to deal with trimming T-molding and since my wood is 3/4 already i am just going to stick with patch , sand , paint . As far as the theme , right now I am sticking with the Tron Theme like yours , although, I want to do a back lit control panel like the NASA build . and do stickers on the sides, no portholes, although I love the portholes.
-
I probably wouldn't go the porthole route again for what it is worth.
-
I started on the drawer and control panel box , I hope to do a plexiglass top that is translucent and will light up like the NASA build. I hope I can do it, although I don't know how yet. The Monitor placement is a pain in the ... I lifted it in and out of the cabinet at least 10 times yesterday. I think I have the placement right. I still don't know how to keep the bezel in place. Anyway, I am enjoying every minute of this build.

Cant you rotate the bottom plate 180 degree?

What is the drawer for?

I felt the same exact way with my monitor. I took it in and out many times. It is worth it though. You want to get it positioned so you are happy with it.

I think I should have put the coin door up higher , but i'm not changing it now . Oh well.
I thought the same thing at first about mine and never notice it now.
-
What is the drawer for?
I almost went without a drawer but then I thought what the heck, I'm building this thing it's not taking away any Space or design I might as well put one in for a keyboard and mouse .

I thought the exact same thing. That would probably be enough.

So , I need help setting up the power button switch to the power strip, to power up the whole shhbang. I bought the 25 mm LED power button, I hooked it up to my switching power supply to the + 5v and -5V and it lights up . I dont have +12 v and - 12 v on my power supply.
Will 5v work with these power buttons?
How do I connect the power strip to the button?
-
The way I did mine was to replace my PC power button with one like yours. My PC had two wires for the switch and two wires for power (light) going to it.
I then used a smart power strip to power everything else on whenever the PC is turned on.
-
Yup, smart power strip is the way to go - PC in "Master" output, and the rest in "Slave".
The computer will always have power, so just grab 5V/12V from the computer to make sure the power button is always lit.
-
Vince, Where did you pickup that coin door?
-
Nice build mate - I know it's only a minor thing but I'm using the same power switch on my build, albeit a red one. I think I overpaid for mine but pffft.
I really like the way you've rounded the corners around the profile - looks really good. Tell me there's a CRT going in there...?
And glad to see you're enjoying the build process. Too often people (me included) rush it and screw up. You've got the right mindset.
-
I got the same button but in red led light, i wonder if the power led pinout from a pc motherboard has enough voltage..
Otherwise ill just get it from the pc power supply 12v
-
Vince, Where did you pickup that coin door?
Twisted quarter

New update worked on the Marquee area. I had some trouble figuring out how it works. Thanks for the input guys o how to do this. Check out my mistakes on the side , It will all go away with patch and sand.

So my Dad was able to help me while I was at work today . I am lucky, because I set my deadline for Thanksgiving , and it is approaching fast. So, He cut out the fan, and vent holes, fixed the coin door placement so that it is higher , and also created the control panel top.

after getting 2 very high estimates
Wait, your brother was going to CHARGE you to build the cabinet?? :dizzy:
Glad you decided to tackle it on your own. You never learn when others do something for you, and now you will have the experience of saying you built it yourself (with help from Dad).
Looking great, and don't let the purists bring you down. While you will probably never use the keyboard and mouse once up and running, if the drawer is tight and hidden, it's not a big deal. Whatever works for you is what it's all about.
Looking good!

Fixed that for you. I'm out of gold stars and participation ribbons, unfortunately.

Thanks . No my brother was not going to charge me but two other estimates were just too much money . My brother would have done it for free , but he is too busy and It would not have been as fun as building it with my dad.

So After further inspection of the console top, I'm worried it is to big. The overhang on the bottom is 3 inches, and the sides are an inch . The overall is 33 wide by 16 . What do you guys think?
-
My cabs control panel was 36" wide and it feels fine to me so 33" should be fine. As for the overhang, 3" seems just a tad deep but if it looks good then go with it. No one will even notice or care about such a detail, so long as it doesn't affect game play it should be fine.
-
Thanks , for the input. The past few mornings , I have been patching and sanding, patching and sanding, and patching and sanding. Tim, Why didn't you tell me to do laminate for the cabinet? Oh yeah you did tell me . Prepping for paint is the least amount of fun.

I think the CP looks great. It's what you think and feels right. It's your cabinet, think of it as a piece of art, unique to your design. Unless your going for a copy of a real machine,
Mine is 32" wide with 4" overhangs on the sides.
With the painting, prime it with a light coat, after filling and sanding it once or twice, then go back and sand and fill, because you will miss something and the first coat of primer will bring it out. I painted sanded twice, four times on the edge. I used MDF and no t-molding, just routed the edge. the paint caused the MDF to puff-up, but it was cheaper than the T-molding.
-
It doesn't look like you are using mdf but if you are then be sure to use an oil based primer. Oil based primer on mdf won't cause it to swell and it will provide better coverage because the mdf won't suck it up as much.

Still Sanding and prepping for paint. Also , Got some speaker fabric and copied ScottyC's Speaker grill . I think it looks pretty cool. I built a bezel shelf and glass shelf to keep them in place. Paint coming soon.

So I started painting this weekend , the base was was and looks good. The inside is well , not that good, but I guess it will never be seen , I did a lot of prep work on the inside too and it just didn't come out that great. I will do at least two coats inside, and then paint it black. If I had to grade myslef, I would give it a C+, but I am moving forward. I will continue to paint this week and will give special attention to the sides and front which are very clean as far as prep.

I started painting black inside. We will see how this goes. The first coat well, is not looking great but we will see after the second coat. I will sand in between coats .

I sanded the cabinet this morning , boy Im getting tired of paintwork. But I used 1000 sandpaper and wetsanded the front of the cabinet , its working great supersmooth .
So, I have been messing with the control panel artwork. This is still WORK IN PROGRESS, but i thought I would share it .I am a left handed player so i thought i would make player 1 with left handed controls.

I installed some LEDS underneath the cabinet and in the Control Panel . It is looking pretty cool.

This has been a fun build to watch. It's some nice work. I'd still probably laminate the outside of the cabinet (I hate prepping and painting).
I totally agree about making the cabinet for yourself and since you are left handed... well, now I have a question. Do you normally play cross handed?
The life of a lefty. Brutal. I built a cabinet with my nephew who was left handed. Some tools were just plain dangerous for him to use and watching him try to use scissors was painful.
-
I have a friend who has a 4-player pedestal and player 1 is left handed. As far as I know it hasn't caused any issues.
:pics
-
Yeah as a lefty I just learned to play right handed on the games that only had the right hand version. I am going with player one being left handed.

A few more pics of the new screen . I am still trying to work out , How I am installing the Speaker panel so that I can remove it , as I see already that I will need to replace the speaker cloth after a few years or maybe even sooner.I am also trying figure out what is the best way to install the marquee monitor. I am trying magnets for the black piece below the marquee it seems to work pretty well. The speakers are another story. I am still messing with them.

You can use velcro to secure it to some battens. Later on you can just push it out if you can get at it from the inside of the cab or pull it out from the outside.

Does the HD4350 card work properly with your CPU? I have the same model Lenovo as you and cannot get it to boot with an HD5450. The card works in other computers so I think it is a Lenovo issue.

Third coat on the sides . Still needs at least one more . As you know black shows every imperfection , I just need to let it go though . I wetsanded the last coat with 2000 . It seems to be working but I really don't know what I'm
Doing . Can I borrow some laminate ?

Looking good. You are so right about letting it go though. I have the same problem when I paint.
-
So , I added the LCD Marquee to the cabinet and put the CRT in to see if they work together , After a few hours trying to get Hypermarquee to work on the 26 LCD monitor and Hyperspin on the CRT and staying there after several restarts, it is working. However, when I select a mame game from Hyperspin, The game moves to the LCD marquee and does not play on the CRT. Bummer. I need to figure this out. The games will play form Daphne, and other emulators, but not groovymame. Huh.

It's actually the Sheen of the paint that shows or hides imperfections. The more shine, the more imperfections arrise. Take a pic of the paint you used... I work in the paint industry and am curious about why it needs 3-coats, and I can give you some pointers so this part of your journey next time is way smoother.

Those smart strips suck ass, the sensor goes out rendering them useless and the adjustment knob gets stripped. Beware.

Well, It has been 6 months and I finally sent the sent my artwork to be printed . I was holding it back just because I was not sure If I really liked it . Well, I like it enough to finish the project , It has been long enough. Its time to finish this box! I have to say I am pretty happy with the sideart . The last part that I need to finish is the most important part the control panel. I have the artwork for it but I want to do a clear plexi top So I need to have that made which I will be done in the next two weeks. Then This thing will be finished. Another delay has been dealing with my LCD Marquee and running Groovymame . I have been trying to get this to work well for months . I have since given up on the "correct" way to run Mame with the LCD Marquee, and I am just running Hypermarquee with EDS and Hyperspin. It seems to work well with most games so I am going with it.

That turned out nice. :applaud:
Were you nervous applying the side-art?
I've been stuck in about the same spot with GroovyMame and my 2nd monitor for a couple of years. Getting ready to take another run at it soon.
-
Thanks Tim. I was very nervous That is why I didn't do it alone. I will say it went very well . The rapid tac worked wonders with removing bubbles . If you need any help with the 2nd monitor , I will offer what I know about the subject which is well not that much.
-
I would have been nervous which is why I asked. ;D
I'll PM you if I get stuck again on the 2nd monitor. I'm 99% certain my main issue is that the 2nd monitor is USB and not HDMI or VGA.
It is great to see you making progress. It inspires me to get off my butt and finish my project.
-
just checking in to see how this build was going. Love the blue tmolding and the side art!

Well after a day of trying to line up my control panel artwork I have failed . I am going to have another piece printed and try again . This is more difficult than I thought . Any tips ?

I would try cutting the artwork to size and then apply it.
- punch a small hole through the middle of each crosshair
- flip the artwork over so that the backside is up
- flip the CP over so that the backside is up
- align the CP and the artwork using the holes as a guide
- use weak double tape or clamps to make sure that CP and artwork stay in place
- use a sharp knife to cut along the edges of the CP
- remove the double tape/clamps
- flip CP and artwork over
- apply artwork
If you can't align CP and artwork properly because one or more holes in the CP are mayhaps a bit off, whip out a ruler, measure where each hole is and adjust your artwork accordingly before having it printed again.
If you happen to have a messed up CP lying around, I would use that and the crumpled artwork to do a practice round.
-
Wow, that looks really cool all lit up like that! :applaud:
Yamatetsu has some good advice. Hope you have better luck on the 2nd try.
-
Thanks for the advice , Im going to try that on the crumpled up artwork .

Installed the control panel artwork ! Overall, I think it looks good. I had 4 clamps and went slow , the only issue was that I missed a spot spraying Rapid Tac underneath the artwork . Boy without using rapid tac there were some tough bubbles to remove . I also started mounting joysticks and the trackball to the control panel . It's coming along .

Started wiring and putting the control panel together . It's looking good . I made a mistake right near the trackball cutting the CP artwork . I took my time but It happened . It's right where the trackball bezel is supposed to go but I guess I could cut a smaller hole for the trackball , so I guess I could just cut a larger hole and then the bezel will fit over the mistake .

Your CP is shaping up very nicely and that trackball is really fun.
Does the trackball light up?
-
It sure does. I hope it's not gonna blind the players.

I'm not sure, I might switch the button plungers to black , like most people are doing. What do you think ?
-
I say keep them clear.....looks sharp as it is. Black is plain....
-
Try it as it is. See if you like it.
You can always order a couple of black plungers later without having to rewire everything :)
-
the trackball will blind your players, fire the leds from the sides. and your gonna have this nice kaleidoscope on your ceiling.
for the buttons, you could always just use black casing with the clear center plunger, or vices versa clear casing with black plunger so you get the clear ring effect.
-
Very Nice build!
I'm 'borrowing' some ideas for my cabinet.
Looking forward to the final reveal.
thx

Some wiring pictures , I am almost done . I am having trouble with my LEDs not working with my iPac ultimate . I need to figure it out .

Nice progress!! Can we get back to that LCD marquee please!!! Give us the details about it and where you got it. Lets see some live action pics!!

I had a bad day working on the machine . I found the time to spend almost a full day on the project . I put the machine together adding the monitor , putting the control label on and start to wire all of the items .
Problems
1. Wiring the power switch . I can't get this thing to work it keeps giving me an error . More on this later ...
2 . My IPac ultimate is not lighting up my buttons . I have power 5v connected and I have my leds that I made from Paradise Arcade RGB LEDs and they are not lighting .
3 . No desktop . Im trying to adjust , all my settings but I removed my desktop to early and now it's just a pain in the a** to fix any settings .
4 . The 2nd monitor causes havoc .
The LCD marquee looks cool but it seems like it's a prototype and not ready for production , every time I'm running Hyperspace selecting games it seems that the cursor pops to the second monitor and then I can't select a game or anything . I have to cntrl/ tab to get back to the the CRT . It happens a lot . My Groovymame settings are not right for the two monitors either . I am hearing audio delays , and a few games don't play right .
It was a frustrating day , I guess I thought once I had everything in my possession , I would just put it all together and it would work . I felt like throwing the towel In today .
-
Hey Vince, I have my 2nd monitor working with EDS, if I can help let me know. One question would be are you using Rocketlauncher? If not I would highly recommend looking into it as it was designed to run with Hyperspin and pretty much any emulator. I don't have much experience with Groovymame, but it may be responsible for some of your problems, not sure. In my setup it's just plain Hyperspin, Rocketlauncher configured with standard Mame and EDS with Hypermarquee and it's running great.

After thoughts of a creating a dumpster fire with this machine I had a moment of clarity . My computer for the machine went down and I was losing it , i could not figure out what the problem was , so I took my drives to work and they were fine . I was still getting power to the computer but it was not booting up . I went out and got another used computer like the one I had and swapped the ram and hard drives and everything worked for a day and then down again . This is when I was ready to give up . I figured it was the video card that failed . I took it out and everything worked fine , so I ordered a new video card , now I have two working computers , oh well it was only 100.00 bucks . I also realized that my wires that power the IPac ultimate needed to be swapped and we now have light!
https://youtu.be/t124w-vXxuI
I made some adjustments to my Joy2key settings, the joystick when selecting games was too sensitive .
I just need to get some of the wiring setup like the trackball , power button , and volume control and I will be finished .
-
awesome! home stretch now.
-
Almost complete. I just need to sort out the power strip /power button situation , and volume knob on the front of the control panel and then I need to figure out how to program LEDBlinky and this thing is done.
-
That looks really sharp!
-
Thank you , I am almost to the end. Well, I really with never be finished , Right?
-
Some Random CP Pics.
-
That looks great. It almost looks like your CP is lit up on the edges. I like the look. Is that just light escaping from the plexi or did you do something specific for that effect?
-
Yeah its light escaping, I thought I was going to put T-molding on the edge, but this actually ending up looking kind of cool. However, I did cut for T-molding so , I may still do it. Thanks though, I am still trying to figure out LEDBlinky .
-
Can we get some info on the marque LCD please?
-
The Marquee is running EDS running HyperMarquee, and HS as the frontend. The Marquee is a custom LCD I bought direct from China. They cutdown a 28 Inch LCD to make a 26 . Pretty cool.

I just wanted finally show the end pics of the machine . I have since replaced my NOS D9800 tube with an old working tube since my D9800 tube crapped out. What a sad day that was. I still miss the beautiful Blacks that tube would give me . Well at least I have a working monitor with no burn in , but not as great as my other tube. Here are some pics I took of the completed machine . I still have issues with focus with Hyperspin, and my joystick goes in and out controlling HS. But generally it works well. I know it has been a long time but I wanted to call this project Finished!

That turned out great! I was thinking a few weeks ago that you had never finished this. Our builds are similar except of course yours is done. ;D
Too bad about your monitor but I'm glad you got that fixed. Have you had fun playing it?

I am absolutely having fun playing it. My 9 year old son and his friends love to play it. Since I have it in the garage, neighbors walk by when the garage is open and always ohh and ahhh at it . I hope the monitor lasts for a at least a few years. I would hate to put in an LCD , but I won't look for another CRT , Im done with them. I might be ready to do another machine soon, maybe a dedicated driving machine.

Excellent! Glad you are enjoying it.
I hear ya on the CRT. I've got a spare D9800 I've been keeping around just in case. It is a PITA to store though so I'm thinking of selling it just to get the space back.

Post Mortem :
1. The spinner buttons are to close together , they should be further apart.
2. This cabinet is heavy, using wood with a CRT and a LCD , this thing is a pain to move.
2a. Paint , I would not paint the sides, No no No . I would do the vinyl. It would be so much easier.
3. The LCD marquee is awesome , i had to put it in this machine , but it causes some problems with focus that I do believe is related to having the second monitor.
4. Hyperspin: Oh how I love/hate Hyperspin. joystick focus issues, is it because of the the second monitor? maybe not.
5. Volume Control. I never got this installed on the outside of the machine . I wanted a volume knob , well I use two buttons on the CP to control volume when the Jukebox is running or I open up the coin mech and
the Master Volume is sitting right there so I just turn it up or down.
That is all I kind think of right now. Otherwise this machine is just Great!
-
Super job! - I sooooo want an LCD marquee... I haven't found the right sized one (but I'm still looking..)
Very very cool
-
Looks good, congrats on completing this. :applaud:
If I were you, I would probably find a solution for holding down your internals. It'll make moving the cabinet around a bit easier if things like the PC, Woofer, and volume control is all battened down.
I hear you on the weight. And thank you for mentioning that. I've been trying to explain the weight factor in another member's project thread here, someone doing a pretty overkill 2x4 framing before even adding the cut panels, but it seems like they're going to learn the hard way.
You didn't put in that overkill framing, and opted for a regular assembly, which I commend you on. Even then, the weight is pretty hefty with the monitors and gear in it, so I'm happy to see you didn't do overkill too much on the wood. I mean, you got a bunch of support braces, and I guess the additional keyboard shelf would add even more weight, but at least you didn't frame it like you're building a house. :lol

Yes, I was going to secure the computer, subwoofer, and power supply , but I have been constantly tweaking the machine and I did not want to "Lock" it down until I was finished. Well I'm pretty much finished now , so I guess its time to secure the inside . Also , I added a new thing that I would change . I would not paint the sides like i did , coat after coat , sanding , no no no , vinyl for sure. .Thanks

Thanks so much. What size are you looking for?
-
My cabinet has room 31" (inside to inside) and I can make 7" vertical work with a little fussing about (trimming panels, etc..) which I made removable in the event I decided to get an LCD.
Love the changing of the screens with the games.. etc..
Which would make me want to design some crazy CP with backlighting and all the cool stuff you guys have done.

Looks pretty amazing. Love how the trackball looks like it's freaking plasma. Where did you get that?
Also really love that clean marquee retainer, I'm guessing that came with the LCD.
Such a sweet machine.

Thanks. The trackball came from here. I had to diffuse the light coming up from the led . Otherwise, it would blind the players. Not good. I think I used some cheesecloth to diffuse it.
https://www.homeofpoi.com/
its a juggling ball ha ha.
Yeah the border on the LCD did come with the monitor.

Juggling ball and cheesecloth, huh?! There has to be a joke in there somewhere!
Is that the Over/Under mini door system from Twisted Quarter?

I'd love to know the dimensions. My coin/cashbox are separate, and I might end up replacing it with one unit like that. Looks a lot cleaner that way.

Ha ha I knew it as soon as
I typed it , that was going to be a funny item .
That is the coin door I have . I will get you the dimensions .
