I've decided to update the PC in my cabinet and decided to throw on windows 10. So far I've gotten everything to work except for the happ 3" trackball only moves horizontally.
I've tried removing all other mouse devices and reinstalling just the trackball ... still only moves horizontally.
This is the same if I use ps2 or usb. During all testing the only thing plugged in was the trackball.
Plugging it back into a windows 7 computer both direcation work ... so the pcb on it are fine (I've read others having issues with a pcb going out).
Does anyone know of a driver that I would need other than the standard windows driver?
Another route I could go is re-wiring it to my iPac ultimate IO. I saw in this thread someone was going to do similar but it was never updated if that worked or not.

thanks for any help

If you have a UEFI graphical bios on your Windows 10 PC, boot into that and see if you have the same problem. Also, try a linux boot CD (any distribution that boots into a GUI.)
That way you'll know if the problem is with Windows or not. No sense looking at Windows if you have the same problem in linux or the bios.

This is great advice. It could be something on the computer itself.
Linux live disk is what I would use, but you could plug in a different hard drive, load windows 10 and see if it still has the issue.

The linux live cd was a great idea.
I tried the trackball on 4 different computers 2 failed, 2 success.
1. Trackballl on the new cabinet hardware booting into ubuntu only moves on the x axis. Trackball also only moves on the x axis in the graphical bios.
2. I also tried using the trackball on a brand new windows 10 laptop ... same problem, only x axis.
3. I tried using the trackball on an older windows 7 laptop and it works great.
4. I also re-tried the original cabinet windows 7 hardware and it still works great.
This seems to be an issue with newer hardware.
So this is where I'm at if anyone has anything to add to try out ... I'm going to reach out to Happs and maybe they can add something.

From there, I'd try a couple things. First (least technical) is to make sure you're getting enough power to the board. To do that, either try a powered usb hub, or a F-MM usb hard disk (or data/charge) cable that looks like this one. (https://www.amazon.com/SinLoon-Enhancer%C2%A0Y%C2%A0splitter%C2%A0Hub%C2%A0Adapter%C2%A0Cable-Female-Charge-Extension/dp/B01DZQEIJE/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1468102083&sr=8-12&keywords=usb+y+cable) (Not a recommendation of that particular cable; it just shows the kind I mean.)
Second would be to test the emitter/detector boards directly with a multimeter (might be easier than swapping wires.) There are instructions on the bottom of Ultimarc's Optipac page (https://www.ultimarc.com/optipac3.html) that explain how to do that.
You could also see if you can easily swap the X and Y wires on the trackball itself to determine if it's the main board that's flaky or a emitter/detector pair. I don't know what your wiring looks like, but if you have purple and blue from one side, and yellow and green on the other, you'd swap purple with yellow, and blue with green. (If red/black tests to 5 volts at both boards, I wouldn't bother swapping those)
Connecting to the UltimateIO is pretty straight-forward (if you have the connectors to do it), and you're bypassing the trackball's main board that way, but if you have a problem with the optical parts, that'll carry over.

powered usb hub fixed it!!!!
i thought a 550w would be plenty to power this new hardware...i was wrong.
nexusmtz & leapinlew thanks for all the help!

Glad it's working. It's unlikely that your power supply can't spare an amp at 5 volts. This is a matter of how many milliamps of 5 volt power are available at the usb port. The trackball might be trying to pull more than it told the computer it needs, or the motherboard might not really be supplying the full usb spec (500mA, I think) at that USB port.
Either way, you found a workaround. Go back to having fun :)
