Hi folks,
I've been thinking about building an arcade with Street Fighter II championship edition, Marvel Vs. Capcom, and Tekken 3. I've been doing a lot of reading but being a complete newbie in this hobby, I'm not sure what is the best option for what I'm looking to build. Should I build something with a Jamma board and a switch to hold multiple pcbs? Should I go the Mame route?
If I go the Jamma board build, are there switches that can switch amongst 3 or 4 different pcbs?
If I buy a street fighter II championship edition arcade game, is that a Jamma board design I can just add a switch and buy the pcbs for the games I would like to add?
If I go the Mame route, is there any difference in terms of joystick response time compared to the original arcade games? I played at a friend's set up and the latency was very noticeable. I was really worried about this, but I don't seem to see any complaints about this anywhere on the boards. I can only guess my friend's set up was done improperly?
Thanks for any feedback. I'm in the NYC area and any help in acquiring a cabinet or advice would be very much appreciated.

I can't speak to much here but I can tell you that street fighter runs flawlessly on MAME , tons of different versions of the game actually. I believe marvel vs capcom does too, maybe somebody else here could confirm that because my software isn't all up and running atm. Tekken 3 however I don't believe will run worth a damn on MAME or any other emulator for that matter and there's no answer as to when it will.
How about picking up a tekken3 cabinet (or hardware? I know little about that). and also making space in your cabinet to run a mame PC.You could switch between the legitimate Tekken 3 arcade game and run everything else on MAME. I bet that would be a pretty rock solid setup and get you access to the entire plethora of solid well emulated fighters in MAME.

You can get switchers, or make your own, kick harnesses are the consideration but it can be wired to work.
But even as someone who loves original hardware and has a switching cab, I'd consider Mame if I were you especially for a fighting game project.

I would also go the mame route. Tekken 2 and 3 are no goes, Cant remember if 1 works or not....
But you can play lots of different versions of SF.
Most people consider SFIII the best version to play and that also runs great but you need the CHD as well.
You can also run MK 1-3 and 4 if your PC is up to it.
Then theres Soul Calibur, KOF, Marvel vs Capcom and loads of others.

I would have to go with mame. Also you could run dreamcast. Some will disagree but I really like playing Mk gold since I can't play it in mame, as well as soul calibur.

My supergun was built to be a "console" that plays original fighting game hardware. It is setup specifically for CP1 and CP2 Capcom fighters, as those are the 2 kick harnesses I've wired in.
I think having a dedicated cab that switches between your favorite 3 fighting games would be sweet.
Your 3 chosen games each take a different kick harness, but that's no big deal.
You also can hook up switches without too much problem.
The main issue I see with your build idea running original Jamma hardware is cost. Gathering your materials for a triple dedicated build is going to add up fast.
I'd love to see it though.

Well, they are available for PS1. Console ports, no doubt, but pretty well emulated... That could be and avenue worth looking into.

They all work fine in MAME.
Your PC probably just isn't fast enough.
Tekken 3 will even run on older hardware using Zinc emulator.

Last time I tried them 2 & 3 defo did not work at all.
Cant remember 1 though :s

I'm sure there are threads elsewhere on Tekken 2&3 performance emulated. Pez I suggest you look around the forums or try getting MAME up and running regardless of this particular project getting a MAME setup is rewarding and will expand your horizons. Why don't you see what you can get MAME and other arcade emulators to do for you then go from there. Badmouth without hijacking this thread I'd be curious what your running hardware wise to get MAME to perform with Tekken 3 and Other model 12 games I'm running an 8 core amd processor over locked to 4.5ghz and it ain't happening for me

I am running a AMD A10 4.1, ghz ,8 gigs of modest ram, and a gtx 650 card. All of the above run fine, no lag at all. Honestly I saw the most gains in performance after I added the video card.

My cab is running a 3.4 GHz Athlon X3 with MAME v.146 64-bit.
Has had a 9800GT most of it's life, but updated to a 750ti with more ram recently so I could play MKX. I'm probably running a no nag build on the cab.
Tekken 3 is borderline, but one of the revisions runs faster than the parent rom. IIRC, I still have HLSL enabled, but have the prescale set to 1(no scaling).
I also ran it circa v.138 on a 2.8Ghz processor with occasional slowdown.
When I tested the no filler game lists on an identical pc using MAME v.170, a lot of the games that run full speed on my cab were too slow to be playable.
