Title: Using 12 mm MDF
Post by: zobook on July 07, 2016, 03:25:26 pm
Hi, i dig up and old thread talking about using 12 mm MDF, but back then there weren't many people using that for cabinet construction that can give advice. The idea of using 12 mm comes from lower price by sheet and less weight. Is not a full size cabinet, more like a lowboy or a scaled down cabinet, single player CP, but will have a fully-cased 17" CRT Monitor (LG 710e).
Is ok to use such a thin material? Should i go for the more expensive and more heavy 16 mm?

Thanks in advice.

depends what you want to do with it.

an LCD...sure. not much on an issue.

a 25" CRT... not so much. gonna need to brace that up big time if you do.

also...think about how you will finish it...can you source 12mm t-moulding? i know you can get 12.7mm (1/2 inch)

I'd stick with tried and true 3/4" (19mm) most everything arcade was made of 3/4. the butons and joysticks accomodate 3/4 in their design... Screwing battons in for support will have much more material to bite into with 3/4 than 1/2".

The monitor i have is 17" and weights around 14 kg (30 lbs), more than my son, i may add... :laugh2:
I have removed the base completely (the one that allows the monitor to tilt and turn), that make it a lot shorter, but very little to none lighter (because is just a piece of plastic).

About T-Molding, i don't have router (and even if i have, is not easy to get). I was planning use U-Molding if i can get the right width.

You can get 12mm Car detail strip that's just like t molding buy is flat without the T. Easily glued on
