Title: Raspberry pi bartop
Post by: deadmoney5 on June 02, 2016, 04:59:44 pm
I'm thinking of building a Q*Bert bartop and want to make sure I'm not missing something.

I plan on using a Raspberry Pi computer because of size and only needing the Q*Bert rom.

I plan on using the following:
Raspberry Pi hardware
SD card
software like Retropie
power adaptor for Pi
Older 4:3 LCD monitor
4-way joy-mounted diagonally
buttons
Ipac for joy and buttons
USB powered speakers

Am I missing anything?  I have built a MAME machine using a regular old desktop computer, but never with a Raspberry Pi.

One of the things that makes Q*bert unique is the knocker. (The solenoid that knocks against itself when Q*bert or coily falls off the grid)

Getting a knocker to work under windows using mamehooker is relatively easy. However, I'm not sure I've seen anyone do it with a Raspberry pi.

Why not just spend another $100 on it and run Jrok's Mylstar board instead?

That's my plan.

If you fart knockers show up on every thread and ---smurfette--- about the Pi we're never going to get these software issues ironed out.

Who's bitching? Paige offered an alternative, and I agreed it was a good one. Why do you like censorship, Jim?

And actually, running Jrok's board means you can eliminate the encoder.

The Jrok board also supports the knocker.

Now that's worth the cost of admission right there.

Well, you know that, and I know that, but we have people not wanting to spend more than six bucks on a knock-off keyboard encoder so your mileage may vary.

How is it "another $100"?  The Jrok Mylstar is $225 by itself.

And the Pi, SD card, and Ipac runs about $125 +/- so an extra $100 buys the Jrok board instead of them !  :dunno

That was about my thinking there.

I had no reason to knock the pi for this application as I am sure it can play the hell out of Qbert, however since there is something plainly better that isn't that much more money then that something (Mylstar) certainly should be considered.

And realistically it is better to look at the total cost of the build with pi, and the total cost of the build with the Mylstar.

Why not just spend another $100 on it and run Jrok's Mylstar board instead?
