Title: Bezel an' ting
Post by: ballboff on May 31, 2016, 07:02:35 am
Hi guys.  I've almost finished my project now.  However, there is just a couple of niggles that are getting on my nerves.

Firstly, I seem to be missing some scraping information.  Can I get into ftp on my phone and edit these manually?  I have some of my own homebrew roms I want to use and the scraping information obviously isn't found so it would be nice to manually force my own.

Secondly, I have a space invaders rom in mame, and I was wondering how I go about using the artwork for that rom?  Space invaders raw rom is in black and white with a transparent screen overlay which had colour on it. This gave the illusion that when the space invaders moved down a line, they would change colour.  There was also a moon and star backdrop.  I know these can be downloaded and incorporated into mame as "artwork", much like the bezel on donkey kong etc is added.

1. Download the desired artwork .ZIP file(s).

-- Sets available for download at Progetto-Snaps (http://www.progettosnaps.net/artworks/).  :applaud:  Antopisa

-- Individual game files are available at Mr. Do's (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php).  :applaud:  Mr. Do

2. Put the .ZIP file in the "..mame\artwork\" folder (leave the file zipped)

3. Launch Space Invaders.

4. Press TAB to bring up menus.

5. Go to the "Video Options" menu.

6. Choose the desired option (highlight and press ENTER) -- "Upright Artwork Midway", "Cabaret Artwork", etc.

7. If the gameplay area is too small, try changing the "View" option from "Full" to "Cropped".

8. If you can't find the look you want, try some of the alternate artwork files on Progetto-Snaps or edit the .LAY file and/or images in the artwork .ZIP file.

Mmmm I'm using mame2003. I don't have any video options.

Derp.  :embarassed:  Didn't think about what version of MAME you were running. (mame2003 is based on v0.78 -- IIRC the directions above are for v0.107 or newer)

I'm guessing that you've already read the posts here (http://libretro.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5085), here (https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/739/advancemame-bezels/6), and here (https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/383/overlays-shaders-not-working-in-mame-fba-and-reicast-working-everywhere-else-though/2), right?   ;D

Yeah I've read those cheers.  Might have to try some of my roms with a different emulator.  Some of the newer games would only work through mame2003 from libretro, but I suppose I could get away with running some of my classics through advance mame instead.  You can have 2 instances of mame, you just copy the roms into the individual mame folders such as lr-mame2003 and advmame etc.

advancemame seemed to load up bezels (and other artwork) ok.  However, you didn't get a choice of which artwork it chose, as there were no video options.  So I think if you want the background, you need to delete the other artwork items in your artwork/gamename.zip file and make sure that it is renamed to be the first ie bezel1.jpg etc.  I decided against using that game anyway, and just loaded up space invaders dx instead, where you can play upright cabinet version, black and white, black and white with cellophane, or standard color.
