Well today I saw on YouTube that someone built an Injustice themed cabinet for their PS3. My PS3 is in the basement collecting dust so I decided do something to get it back in to use. I wanted to make sure that it still worked so I hooked it up to my Bartop. Well the joystick worked but I did not have enough buttons to play the game. I have 6 buttons and it looks like I need 8. Today I started planning to build a new cabinet to put my PS3 inside. I downloaded the plans for a Midway Mortal Kombat cabinet. It looks pretty simple. I have built 3 custom Mame cabinets and 2 bartops so this is nothing new. It is time to do another arcade project. I started working on the artwork tonight. I tried to find the same graphics that were used for a cabinet that I saw on YouTube but was unsuccessful. The next logical hing to do was search Google Images and do my own design for this one. Here is what I came up with so far... I am thinking about illuminating the Never Realms logos on the top sides of the cabinet.

you dont need 8 to play, you can hit button combos
-
Thank you, That is good information. At least I can play with 6 on the bartop until I get the cabinet built. I decided to do a mock up to see what it's going to look like when completed with the graphics. I just finished the left side of the cabinet.
-
Well here is the right side. Can't wait to build the cab and order the artwork for this Baby!
-
I thought I might make a rare artwork forum appearance on this one. ;)
My 2 cents.... If you are trying to replicate the look and feel of a Midway fighting cab (you should! they are awesome!) you have a few things wrong.
Remember, a real cab is all about branding, so the front and sides of the control panel box are typically a solid color with either the publisher logo (the sides) or the game logo (the front). Also the control panel is a bit busy with the stage render being used. I would suggest changing that to a simple repeating pattern... you can probably find something suitable on the game's website. Keep the graphics around the buttons though, those are great.
Hope that helps... it could be a really impressive cabinet with what you have so far.
-
Your side art is cool, but I would fade the differents graphics together... those jarring transitiosn makes it looks a bit odd, imho.
-
Well I went back to the drawing board and came up with this design... I hope I am moving in the right direction. Thanks for the input guys. I want this to be spot on!
-
I like the update much better. Cleaner. I'd still only do 6 buttons though. Button 7 and 8 are simply to make it easier to do multi-button moves on a gamepad.
-
Yes I think that overall the whole thing ties together much better.
-
.
-
On most games there is usually an instruction card. Since I plan to use my PS3 in the cabinet and I plan to play other games from time to time, I created this sticker to be place under the display.
-
It looks like the circle layer around the joystick is covering the 4-8 way text at the top on both player one and player two. Other than that it looks good to me.

Dude, don't listen to the 6 button guys on this on, as Malenko and Slippy are respected members :notworthy:, but don't go with 6 buttons on a console based arcade build.
I went with 8 and i couldn't of been happier with the decision. There is no point in contorting your fingers to do button combos if 7 and 8 and can pull it off with a single button press.
Check out the MKX build in my sig line if you want some more ideas, art looks good :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:
Needs white t-molding, black, or chrome-black, red (not so much)
-
Looks fine, but I'm not a big fan of the gigantic-looking PS3.

Anyfart, I didnt mean to imply he should only use 6 buttons on this build, just that MK9/MKX/Injustice do not require 8 buttons to play

Took out the large PS3 logo.
Not sure that' s better.
Do you really need anything that says PS3 anywhere? To me, it breaks the illusion of it being an arcade cab. It's like putting "Intel Inside" on a regular MAME cab. Let the game speak for itself, in my opinion.
Other than that, nice job.
-
Do a moves bezel, since you're going to have to have a widescreen in there might as well make the unused real estate count for something.
Also rablack's MK cab is the widest that a cab can be and not suck, keep that in mind.

+1 with the homie on this one pay homage to the game not the console. I used an xboxone, with no xb1 verbiages or logo's.
Yot, this cab is deceiving, its not a injustice dedicated, its an injustice themed cab, so i think more than one game will be played on it, which is why PS3 is being displayed.

You can play tempest w/o a spinner too, but its not as fun >:D . You can play CAVE games on a wide screen, but it looks better on a vertical. The Dallas Cowboy art looked better w/o the marquee. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Nice job so far OP! Looking great. If you are going to use an LED/LCD, I modified my bezel for one. You can have it if you want it...

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but I actually ended up installing a 27" LED monitor in all three of my custom cabs and they look AMAZING so I had to redesign the bezels...

Did you ever update the MKX Bezel, and would you mind releasing that one too?

After the Kombat Pack 2 was released, there were too many characters to fit them all on one bezel unless I included ONLY the finishing moves, and they all have a LOT of them too. The most up to date one I have only features the original characters that were released with the game before any of the Kombat Packs were released...
