I've only a minor bit of chuffiness going on so far. I made a flying spaghetti monster out of balloons for nephews grad party. We released it to hover and deliver its meaty gaze over Tennessee this past weekend. I've not been doing much arcade stuff, but the selection of arduino components i ordered have been trickling in. Daughter and I are doing Robots!Sounds like fun! Remember, the Summer of Chuff thread doesn't always have to be about Arcade stuff! Thanks for sharing.

There's a header on the device for a remote setup that bypasses the DIP. I'm wiring one up and will have pics soon. It'll be coin-door accessible like Mal said.

Jim's not too far off... Thre are about 5-6 games total I'd HAVE to have with this setup since its PPU dependent. The rest are extras.

Oh so you need to match the PPUs.... that's a different story then. I was thinking more along the lines of running some NES roms on it for a rgb NES.There are some hacked roms that allow you to use different PPUs, so there is some flexibility. There is another project out there called the UniVersus that allows you to use any PPU and can run some NES roms, but no one has seen it or heard any news since the end of last year.

- Total Carnage/SmashTV - I need to replace the JAMMA harness in this. The game resets on occasion and I just noticed that the P2 fire right (joystick 2 on player 2) is not working. Turns out a wire fell out of a crimp connector. (old wiring), so at least it's something simple. I'm going to tear it all out and replace it with a quality JAMMA harness and re-crimp connectors all around to make it rock solid. Then I'm going to look into a QUALITY 3 in 1 connector so I can add Robotron.

I wish I could say that I did all this myself, but I paid pros to install the window and do the tile work.
I think the top chunky shelf looks like a bit of a cop-out because it's just a board across the front.
I made a new one that's as thick as the middle shelf, but haven't stained it yet.
Those are my old towels. Trying to figure out a towel color that works and isn't brown (first world problems).

I assumed my crap would be considered a type of biohazard that needed to be buried or otherwise disposed of properly, but it turns out that it's perfectly legal to toss your own ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- in with the regular garbage pickup. I threw some kitty litter in with it hoping not to be called out.
Turns out that I don't have to crap as often as I thought.
If the option isn't there, I just don't go.
(or it could just be that I was careful about what I ate)
IIRC, I ended up with 5 bags of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Mostly from mornings where I had to go immediately and was too lazy to throw on clothes and drive a few miles.

I looked at the shed of games. They are all dry, no rot that I can see. The machines haven't been overly abused outside of normal wear and tear. I think I'll have a pretty decent shot at getting them working unless there is something catastrophic wrong. There are TWO Joust machines. The guy is giving one of the Joust machines to me as payment for working on the rest of the machines. Considering Joust is one of my wife's favorite games and one I love as well, this is perfect.
So, yeah, I'm getting a dedicated Joust! I'm actually going to have the beginning of a real game room.

Once I got desperate and didn't have a toilet plunger and had to use my shower. Waffle stomp is as horrible as it sounds. Wish I had though of a trash bag.

Even at cost though, the stone top will be the most expensive item in the room, and the top and vanity combined is nearly double the cost of the entire rest of the bathroom figuring in every fixture, screw, nail, and pipe fitting. But I just didn't want to take a chance at doing a super dark stain on hardwood and end up with less than perfect results. Usually you have to dye the wood first to get super dark and not splotchy, and I am just not set up for using dyes in my shop, so rather than use up $250 in cherry wood and then ruin it trying to stain it a dark coffee color, I bit the bullet and ordered it up. Then once I was in for the custom cabinet, I wasn't going to make a laminated countertop, so I opted for stone, which around here starts at $100 per sq foot...
Here is where I started: a 1966 bathroom with a really bad 80's reno. That's an old steamer shower without the steamer part, the original 1966 valves, and to top it all off, commercial white fiberglass waterproofing panels on the walls.

The 3 layers of flooring had rotted out around the toilet and after 3 attempts to re-seat the toilet that would eventually unseal and flood in my basement several months later, I finally got pissed enough to gut the bathroom to the studs... With the exception of 10 minutes to move the tub into the bathroom, I did the whole thing solo, which sucked sometimes but hey, it's rewarding, right?
And the nearly finished results:

The contrast pops between the porcelain white fixtures and vanity top and the charcoal tile and light gray walls really came out great. I am excited to get the last few pieces in place and call it done.. after which I will be starting on putting new windows in the upstairs rooms, after I strip the rooms down to bare walls, patch and retexture, prime, paint, new trim, and new carpet.. Aside from the kitchen floor, that will be the last project before the entire house has been renovated (since I bought it in 2000). AND, that will mark the start of re-renovating the basement, lol...
Somewhere in there I need to write another novel and maybe even get around to building a sit down cab for racing sims... I have a busy year planned..

Well if you are a cheapskate like me, there are other options. Because an Atari cart is basically a rom chip and that's it, you can do bank switching with dip switches and make a XXX in 1 cart fairly easily. 4k roms won't work though. Harmony is the bees-knees though, it just seems like the Atari scene is super pricey and given the tech in the vcs it should be the cheapest.

Although I've spent quite a bit of time working on Janky Kong, I also took a little bit of time to do a composite mod on a 2600 that I had. Coupled with a Harmony cart and it's been great.
Heh, I have a yard sale dirtpile rescue 2600 I repaired recently sitting on my workbench with a composite/svid modchip waiting to be installed. I probably should have just gone with the regular composite. Much quicker mod and not many TVs have S vid anymore.

That might be a behaviour of your specific modchip. Other chips might be different. Really, I just want to bypass the RF modulator. I'm not looking for a magical RGB pixel perfect image of a square chasing a rhombus. ;D

That might be a behaviour of your specific modchip. Other chips might be different. Really, I just want to bypass the RF modulator. I'm not looking for a magical RGB pixel perfect image of a square chasing a rhombus. ;D

Yes, all the brass is going away this summer.. That comes to around 15 door knobs total, so it won't be cheap..
My insurance estimate for the last big storm came in at around 15 grand, and it covers some of the stuff I was already planning this summer, so I think the next few months are going to be even busier than I thought.. I need to do 30 square of roof, replace some fascia, all the rain gutters and downspouts, garage door, all upstairs windows, add 2 full egress windows to downstairs, replace and paint some siding (so I will probably repaint the whole house and use this as an opportunity to change up the colors), rebuild and stain 100 feet of cedar 6 ft fence, and then redo the 3 bedrooms, lol.
This was more or less the plans for the next 3 years (except the roof that is practically brand new), so my reno plans are greatly accelerated, and I am not sure it's a good thing. It's nice that some will be covered by insurance, but damn this one is going to hurt the pocketbook... Thank God I'm not married or I wouldn't have money for this sort of thing..

So I got Mike's Arcade Shop goodies in the mail yesterday. Versus to JAMMA adapter, Ms. Pacman to JAMMA adapter and a Nintendo coin sticker. Also got some white T-molding samples.
I held off on the coin door slot covers for now. I want to see what I can do to my existing ones before I waste any money on new ones.

I believe the primary difference is that about world 6 the arcade joystick fails entirely and you have to complete it by kicking the coin door to activate directional switches.
BTW, names du jour here in MA are Gaelic. Every other kid I meet is a Seamus, Declan, or Siobhan.

I modified a Heavy Sixer I had and a Jr I was given. To be honest, the Jr has a better picture than the Sixer after the mod, but neither of them really look good on a modern LCD. Since the new TVs process out flicker and stuff, some games don't look right. Asteroids is a good example.
If you have a CRT that has composite in, it'll look awesome. But on a fancy new LCD, I'm not so sure.
I'm chuffed because I actually fixed the Jr. I did the mod but the picture wasn't right. So I figured out the chroma pot was bad and I swapped it out and now I'm golden.

Was on sale for $160 so I couldn't resist. I cleared a lot of tools off my arcade shelf and now I have a pretty great little work space. Also got all the exterior door knobs changed along with all the deadbolts. This is the year of fixing up the house so maybe I can sell it (and move to AZ?)

Had a good afternoon. Working on a wonky Unisystem board, I used schematics and crap to find that a resistor array had been swapped out with an incompatible one. Digikey order for the win.

Replacing the torque converter tomorrow, the old one got pretty tore up by the bolt that snapped off and got lodged between it and the flexplate.
After that, it's all just re-assembly. Put the transmission back, driveshaft, exhaust, and starter and she'll be good to go again. :cheers:

I have to say, Evil Marie was the hardest of the three bosses, maybe as hard as the TokenTaker... The baby was easy-mode though.I'm always impressed how busy it is there.

Vouchers appear to be worth $69.50 each. If the tickets are "$25" the fees bring it up to $34.75, which means you can get two tickets with one voucher.

Obviously that was unacceptable, so I put the board aside. Flash Forward to earlier this summer, where I got a Castlevania daughterboard and wanted to have a dedicated Castlevania set up. So I downloaded the UniSystem schematics, checked out the board, and found that a resistor array that somebody had changed out was the wrong one. I also found a couple spots where they had done some repairs and lifted some traces. So I ordered what I needed from Digikey.
I got the parts today, went through and changed some stuff up, socketed some chips, and redid some traces... fired it up, and boom! A perfectly working Nintendo UniSystem board. Man, I love figuring stuff out. This hobby has taught me so much.

Yes, though the compiler he's using does bring it one level up from that. It remains to be seen how well that compiler optimizes and that's a major concern on the 2600.

I found it quite amazing the amount of high level language that is in Atari basic. It makes me wonder why we don't have similar fan programming languages for the NES and other 8-bit consoles. I need to look into how to shift memory locations programmatically. A open-source 2600 multi-cart should be possible.... the thing that was holding me back was learning how to program on the Atari.

Had to take the exhaust off, drop the driveshaft, take off the transmission, replace the broken flexplate, and then put it all back together again.

I've got one crt I held on to for lightgun games, but my space is limited, so it's still in storage. If I ever hack rgb input into the thing I might bring it back in.
I'm actually thinking of just picking up a jr. and mod it like you did.... I think the sixers are prettier, but since I'm going to most likely hack it up anyway, I might as well go with the cheapest one. Heck I might skip the middle man and do a 7800.... I still have all the old 2600 controllers and stuff.

Anyway, there's not much "game" there at the moment, but it has been fun. I've been surprised at how little actual interaction there is between players at the various Pokestops and gyms.

It was funny, seeing these roving bands of kids and solitary adults walking around Seaport Village. The shops had just closed but there were tons of people still there. One enterprising dude was hawking beanie caps with Team Valor and whatever other team logos to the players.

One spot on campus has four pokestops that overlap one sidewalk next to a pond. Students and employees had thrown lures on all of them. It was a magikarp bloodbath.
Wandered to the campus coffee shop and drank craft beers as my phone battery slowly faded to oblivion. Rest easy, rattata hoard.

Pokemon go is layered over ingress. Go to ingress.com/Intel. Each point of Interest has matched from Ingress to Pokemon go. You won't be able to tell what is going to be poke stop or what is going to be a gym, but it will give you an idea of the locations. You will need to register in order to do this.

You should check out the Hyperspace arcade near Denver. I spent some time there in April and would love to go back. They have an awesome Vector line-up and as of last week all 14 of them are up and working. They also have my new favorite game Crater Raider.

I'm actually kind of excited about this year. For the last 11 years, I've been the campus technology director. But because of a change in District philosophy on how they want to handle tech support, I made the decision to go back in the classroom. The first nine years at my school, I taught English. But rather than go back and teach that, I have been hired to teach business technology courses, which is right up my alley. I've got seven years to retirement, and this is how I want to go out. One of the cool after shots is that since I sponsor a video game club, I now have my own lab to do dedicated Lan gaming. And I'm actually building a display case with vintage consoles. My goal is to next year teach a course on video game design. Fingers crossed!

You seriously lock up game systems in display cases and tell children they're not allowed to touch your precious collectibles?We break them out and play them every Friday. The Atari is the only thing that belongs to me. The kids brought in the other things. And I locked them up because about four years ago we had an Xbox 360 stolen from the club. We're putting them out on display and they have little Museum type cards with specs on each machine rather than keeping them locked up in a cabinet, hidden from View.

No he needs more Nintendo consoles. Sega sucks. ;) Seriously though, a console collection without a NES is not a console collection. All of modern gaming owes Nintendo for their success, and it was a period of time when developers were still willing to try crazy ideas in a game to see if it would be fun, so there are lots of gameplay styles on the NES that were never tried again. It's very educational is my point.
I picked up a Genesis, two games and a gamepad for 35 bucks ON AMAZON. They are kind of worthless compared to other consoles. The only brand that loses it's value quicker is Sony... you can typically pick up a bare psx unit for 8 bucks, again ON AMAZON (their prices are horribly inflated). Except for the Saturn of course, but now that the copy protection has finally been cracked I expect their value to normalize as well.
Also of note if you are trying to get them for the kids cheap is the fact that gamestop is selling old consoles again. Again, Sony and Sega stuff is really cheap and Nintendo stuff is expensive, but still.... sometimes you are offered gift cards for various promotions and stuff so it's an easy way to get one for free.

NES was a good console, was rather fond of mine but i hated the controllers lol
The spectrum is heaped in gaming history though and deserves a place in any museum.

Tops to anyone who was involved with it that may be on here.
Me and the Ms had loads of fun playing lots of old classics and some cool pin ball machines (I rather took a fancy to spiderman!) and looked at some nice old tech including a few systems I have never seen or heard of so that was pretty cool to.
Also some inspirational self builds which was pretty cool to see and gave me some food for thought.
But ime now rather tired and have sove severly sore fingers!!

The Touchmaster Infinity turns on the monitor and lights an LED on the motherboard. No other signs of life.
The Megatouch Maxx has monitor glow, need to drill out the locks and see what's inside that thing....
Not sure what the hell I'm going to do with these. How's the touchscreen game emulation scene?

Nothing decent is emulated. Touchmaster 6000 is the latest working thing in MAME IIRC.
Last I checked (circa v.146) the megatouch stuff was old AND glitchy. Cards were missing suites, etc.
Just enough to make in unplayable...maybe on purpose.
If any of them are XL, you can run XL Titanium off an IDE hard drive or compact flash/IDE adapter regardless of key.
You might have to increase the memory.

I have two with CF cards in IDE adapters.
They don't boot consistently though. More than half the time it hangs and I have to restart the machine, so I can't unload them. :-\

Why not go with Cricket? Same network, same service, owned by AT&T.
I switched from AT&T a few years ago, didn't even have to unlock my phone.
The only major difference is LTE speeds are throttled at 8 Mbps which doesn't really effect anything I'd want to use my phone for.
I have noticed that while at concerts, my data connection doesn't work for ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.
Not sure if everyone on the AT&T network is experiencing the same thing, or if true AT&T customers are given preference.
Friends with Verizon didn't have any issues at all.
EDIT: Paying exactly $35/mo for unlimited talk/text and 2.5GB high speed data. It's technically unlimited data, but you can't even stream music at the reduced speed.
I held onto AT&T forever at $83 because I was grandfathered into unlimited data, but only averaged 2GB/mo anyway.

I've got to think that all the gear at a show, some of which is wireless these days, combined with being in the pit of a concrete structure with a metal roof is nerfing the cell signals more than service coverage, but that's just a guess.

Recently, I have heard tales of providers putting up extra temporary towers near college football stadiums to handle the added load.

The DolphinBar has the bluetooth built into it. It's about as idiot proof as you can get. It speaks WiiMote directly. I plugged it into my computer, hit the synch button on the bar, then the wiimote, and it just worked. Took a bit figuring out how to get MAME to acknowledge it. Had to set mouse to lightgun, then lightgun to lightgun. Weird, but it worked.
Oh hell. Not a fan of IR guns, but I'll give it a shot.
I've already got a wii gun collecting dust and it doesn't require any modification to my cab.
Gave up on it before because of pairing issues.

I just couldn't wait an extra few days to prove him wrong, so I restarted prime.
I regret it somewhat. Amazon used to be great, but now feels like the odds are always in the house's favor.
free Prime Pantry credit? Sure, but everything that qualifies is more expensive than it is from competitors.
free shipping on a $3 item? Well you'll have to pay $6 for the prime listing vs the $3 add-on item listing.
I might watch an hour a month of prime video and I'm doing it just to make myself feel like I'm getting some use out of it.
They don't so much reward Prime subscribers as they punish their customers who aren't.
It just doesn't pay for itself like it used to.

90% of what I buy on Amazon is stuff that I'd have to spend a ton of time tracking down locally. Hardware stores are gone, electronics stores are gone, general clothing stores have very little left that my kids actually want. It's not so much about saving money as it is about saving time. I'm a lot more likely to just click and buy if I don't have to worry about shipping. Especially if the item is heavy.

Customer service experience is a little bit better for Prime customers.
It's way better. I can return things with almost zero trouble. Hell, now that they have Amazon Locker, I don't even have to mail them back. I can drive to a place 3 miles away that is open 24/7 and return it there.

Nobody price matches anymore. They all have policies but since only major chains exist now they all also have unique model numbers for most items that you would try to have matched. So that identical 32" LCD has a different model # at Best Buy than at Target so "sorry, not the same item, can't price match".

All those are newer movies that are out on DVD but most haven't aired on premium cable channels yet.

Big Lebowski
Hunt for Red October
...all watchable movies, and you seldom see decent stuff like that on Netflix. Netflix blows for movies unless you are after the 10 year old straight to DVD stuff. Netflix is great for Series TV, but Amazon is no slouch there either. And since they are about the same price, the other stuff (music, books, and shipping) place Amazon way ahead in my book.
Movies and stuff aside, the shipping alone is worth it to me. Sure, I can usually find what I am buying for the same price with free shipping (non-Prime) but it won't be here in 2 days. And even when shipping time is not important (it almost always is), I seldom find items cheaper elsewhere, and shipping is still free on pretty much everything, just slower. It isn't often I am OK with waiting 7-10 days for something I bought.
I recently got a month extension on Prime over a $5 set of glasses cleaning cloths that got lost in USPS. AND I got the $5 refunded so if they ever show up I get them free. And a few weeks ago I got a 25u rack (about 85lbs) that was missing some pieces, so they shipped a second one free, I took what I needed and UPS picked up the remainder, all for free. Last I checked, 2 day air on 85lbs is about $150. That one purchase saved me the entire year of Prime and then some, and if I had bought that on Ebay and came up short, I would have been paying several hundred in shipping to get it worked out. Took 2 days to get parts and cost me zero.
Last Christmas I found something at Costco for less and got it price matched on Amazon. I don't look often though, and only call if there is a problem.

Well pbj, the pre-order trick doesn't work anymore. I tried it and when I selected free shipping, the option to ship items separately went away. The estimated ship date on the dolphin bar was November, when the game would go on sale.
Still works. You wait it out a couple days and then they'll ship the in stock item.

So I recently had the very awesome opportunity to pick up my grail add-on kit, the fabled Brasington Multi-Asteroids kit. He doesn't make them anymore, and some people have waited years to get one, so I consider myself very fortunate.
I had some time today, so I went ahead and took the time to install it. I installed the two daughtercards, soldered the wires that needed soldering, fired her up, and.... voila!!! (not walla, mofos)

The LL thruster is an analog controller. There must be some changes in software to make that work.

My guess is that it sill reads it as analog. Just interprets it in only 2 positions:
1. off
2. or max analog

That would make the game really hard to play given how the thrust value is the most important control you have. It might be the only way to do it with one button but it is a substantial change.

By setting those, you can maintain an analog range by tapping the button or direction at a particular speed.
On games like Pole Position you could reduce digital speed until the tires no longer squeal when punching the gas.
I never use it because I have analog controls for most of the games I want to play.
Someday I'd still like to see how playable I can make some of these games with a standard microswitch joystick.
