This week after booting up my MAME cabinet, groovymame has gone kaput and started hitting 100% cpu on launch and no visual indicator it is running, other than a tiny white line in the top right and bottom left corners of my LCD monitor. :/
I've not changed anything afaik, and I've gone back and tried older GMs and they all show the same problem. I'm so confused. :(
I'm running Arch Linux, and I've tried downgrading SDL2 and mesa which are the only things I can think of that may have been updated. After clutching at straws I now get the monitor flashing this:
fD: 6.6Mhz (in red, outside of it's range)
fH: 15.6kHz (in red, outside of it's range)
fV: 60.0Hz (not in red, so within it's spec)
Downloading the official Linux binaries from mamedev.org I can run it fine with SDL, but GM won't run with anything so I presume this could be switchres related?
Default config changes are just:
modeline_generation 0
monitor lcd
GroovyMame is definitely running but may possibly be running at full speed with no throttling, here's a log:

Any ideas? :(
-
modeline_generation 0
monitor lcd
These options are definitely not being used, check your log, it's using the default generic_15 which obviously outputs 15 kHz.
-
Any ideas? :(
Possibly you have a double entry and the last entry is the generic_15, Check your entire mame.ini for any other monitor lines...?
-
Thanks guys, (sorry for the delay in replying the forums are so slow and 500ing all over the place).
I think Calamity is right, I suspect I may have updated the arch linux sdlmame package without realising it and somehow it is now using that config rather than the one it should be.
-
Right, uninstalled sdlmame package, removed ~/.mame directory, searched entire HDD and ensured only one mame.ini exists, and also ran groovymame to check config, it's definitely running the same old config as it ever was. :(
robee@mame:/home/mame$ ./groovymame -showconfig | grep lcd
monitor lcd
lcd_range auto
robee@mame:/home/mame$ ./groovymame -showconfig | grep monitor
monitor lcd
I think tomorrow I'll install expac and try to see all the packages I've installed in the last month to see what has been updated that might have caused it.
-
From my understanding, If your using GM 171, Then that includes (Doozers) patch that corrects out of focus window for SDL 2.0.4.
ie. You should not need to downgrade SDL2 to 2.0.3.
-
Also, Whats going on here?
Are you using 0.172 dat files on Mame 0.171 or something I'm not understanding?

Another thought is that for some reason GM is unable to find/load your Mame.ini and it's reverting to the default (generic_15).

Hi there,
I have also ran 0.172 sets with groovymame 0.171 for a while without any trouble ;-) The sdl library does not affect how the mame.ini file is processed. Any particular reason to mention SDLmame in your post? (could be a typo)
Based on the groovymame build date, I can see that you are using a different built compare to those available on the google drive. Have you already tried one of the those?
v0.171 (Feb 24 2016) [good] - versus - 0.171 (May 1 2016) [personal build?]
-
I'm running a 171 set with 171 groovymame. I mentioned sdlmame because I'd had that installed as a package on arch linux and a recent pacman update had upgraded it, and it creates its own ini file that I thought GM might be using, but it isn't. :/
Running GM with -showconfig lists the config I'd expect it to be using, it's very strange.
-
I've tried downgrading mesa, mesa-libgl, xorg-server, xorg-server-common and sdl2. I've also made sure it is using the correct mame.ini file.
Latest log file seems to show it's trying to do the right mode:

ATTACH your mame.ini file too.
-
Fixed! Thanks for the suggestions, I finally worked out what was going wrong.
Either hiscore.dat or history.dat from 172 seems to cause it, with my money being in history.dat since it appears to be freezing after Initializing and before it shows the info display.
I'm not sure why that would make it hit 100% cpu but I guess it isn't very tolerant of change.
-
How wrong could I be, it's the hiscore.dat which is causing it. I guess 172 version of hiscore is not compatible with 171.

The hiscore.dat that comes with Mame 0.172 is indeed different formatting (For Lua hiscore support).
The question is how did it get to be in your path for hiscore data?
-
MAME Extras :(
-
MAME Extras :(
Is that another package available on Arch?
Or do you mean you copied it from a Mame 0.172 Extras (Art, Titles etc) archive (ie. Zip)?
-
From the MAME Extras archive, not a package from Arch.
-
Thats good, Nothing extra to keep an eye out for then.
-
I don't suppose someone has the MAME 171 hiscore.dat lying around they could attach? :)
I can't seem to find it. :(
-
I'm pretty sure a modified hiscore.dat (Lua Script) only came with Mame 0.172 onward.
There is no change from 0.172 to 0.173 Lua Hiscore dat's.
The 0.172 Lua version I think is the same as the latest MKChamp version - But modified for Lua Script.
(The latest MKChamp version is dated 1/7/2015)
