Title: Projectors and lightguns
Post by: etatoby on April 23, 2016, 05:20:33 pm
Hello

I'd love to play shooting games on my big screen setup (DLP projector on a 130" wall) but I'm not sure what kind of "light guns" would work on it—and how well.

I know classic lightguns won't work, because they all rely, one way or another, on the CRT beam scanning process, which went the way of the Dodo.

I've seen some lightguns on the Internet that rely on infrared LED bars placed around the screen. I've also seen the Wiimote being used inside a gun-shaped accessory, but I'm not sure whether it's just using its internal accelerometer and gyro, or some external sensors placed around the screen, or both.

Is there any lightgun device that will work well on a 130" screen, allowing to quickly aim at moving targets?

130 inches and "quickly" aren't going to go together.

with an optical setup like the aimtrak, you are going to have to maintain a certain distance from the screen, the likes of which are not compatible with a screen of that size. with the maximum probably being 50 inches or so before you have to be too far away for your shots to register properly.

maybe andy can chime in regarding the size limitations of the ultimarc aimtrak

My question is, does a wii/wiiu controller work acceptably with your setup?

I've also wondered about using a gun of some sort with my projector. My projector (an LG) uses an RF remote similar to a Wii controller which actually works quite well. It occurred to me to look into whether there are any PC RF gun controllers in existence, and voila, there do appear to be (http://"http://www.fuzing.com/vli/00356958a331/4-in-1-RF-Gun-PC-|-PS2-|-PS3-|-XBOX").

I haven't really researched it yet, but it could be interesting.

LCD TopGuns are your only choice.

I have done this with the LCD TopGuns, and it works pretty well. The biggest problem is that you need to dim the projector, since if you have to much brightness the guns will not see the IR LED's. I had a plan of replacing the the IR LED's with some higher power ones, but never got the time.

Mabye a bit late, but the problem of being so far away can be solved with a wide angle lens infront of the camera.
(For the topGun, a playstation 2 eyetoy wide angle lens fits exactly on the nose of the topGun) Gives you the ability to stand much closer.
