Title: Official Computer/Arcade Word & Achronym FAQ
Post by: enigma on January 15, 2004, 12:17:28 pm
Welcome to the official Computer/Arcade Word and Achronym FAQ

Post computer or arcade related words and achronyms here and their meanings.
I'll start:

BYOAC: Build Your Own Arcade Controls, this website ;D

IDE: Integrated Drive Electronics, an IDE Cable plugs Into an IDE Port on the Hard Drive and Computer Mobo and Controls a hard drive

Mobo: Slang for computer MotherBoard

RCA: (I don't know what the achronym means), A video quality common in the US, uses three cables, two for audio (left and right), and one for video, or just the one for video, and the audio comes out of the PC's sound card

RF Modualation: Radio Frequency Modulation, Used in older TV's, this hooks up to an antannae port and modulates the radio frequencys that the TV recieves to make it think that it's recieving video from the antannae.

SCART: (I don't know what the achronym means, A video input/output format common in Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong. I don't know much about this format, perhaps someone else can explain it

RGB: Red Green Blue, Sometimes a componet of SCART video

S-Video: Another video format, I believe it is common in both the US and Europe, this is a mid-grade quality between RCA and SCART and uses a round connecter with something like 6 or 7 pins (I don't actually know)

ROM: Read Only Memory, when someone typically speaks of a ROM, they are usually talking about the data from a ROM chip in the arcade machine or game cartridge which is the code for a game, these can be played in an Emulator

Emulator: An emulator runs a ROM file and makes the ROM think that it is running on it's original hardware so you can play it on a different hardware

If I have made any errors, please correct them, but please do not debate about it, this post is meant to help people.
Once Again, you can post any other achronyms or words here, as long as they are related to computers or arcade machines

um--don't we already have a thread for acronyms and definitions called "emulation cabinet definitions"?  this seems redundant to make two--why don't you post this info into that thread?

Not used too much with actual manuals anymore, with the proliferation of FAQs out there. I geuss they'd have to change the acronym :)
