Title: Stumper: Can anyone get a 31" Monitor to run in 1024x768?
Post by: Guardian on January 14, 2004, 11:59:26 pm
I imagine this will be a stumper to most people. I am hoping that there is someone out there like Dak-Ak that helped me with a PowerStrip problem with this new issue I have. :)
I have the following monitor, this is just a pic:
http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/31/Z00441/Z0044100.shtml (http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/31/Z00441/Z0044100.shtml)
Here is the exact details of the monitor:
http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/31/Z00441/Z0044104.shtml (http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/31/Z00441/Z0044104.shtml)
They say this only supports 800x600@60Hz, but this monitor came out in 97, way before the modern video cards with the things they can do. :)
Can anyone help me to see if I can get 1024x768 with/without powerstrip, any way, to get a smaller picture on this monster would be great.
Also, does anyone else have this big ass Gateway Monitor? What do you mainly use it for? I was thinking DVD's/TV/HDTV off the PC Card, but wouldn't mind playing HL2, Doom3, etc on it, if I can get a higher res. :)
Thanks All,
Guardian.

The page with the monitor specs only list three example resolutions. To determine it can do higher resolutions than 800x600 you need to find the maximum number of lines the tube has and the horizontal sync frequency.

It might still be possible to display higher resolutions if you supply them interlaced. This will introduce some flickering though.

Also, reading the monitor spec it appears they do digital processing on the input signal. Most monitors who do that kind of thing will not display anything that is outside their preset modes.

A 31" monitor is approx 24x18". If you run 1024x768 each pixel is approx 0.6x0.6mm. The monitor spec says that the dotpitch is at best 0.83x0.79mm. Even if you can get the monitor to run 1024x768 it will probably look really blurry.

thanks for the replies,
Too bad, my main goal was to see if I could get my HDTV Tuner card to work on it at like 1080i. Does this help any? or make the situation worse? It is an interlaced signal, I thought that may help.
BTW: when I set the HDTV PCI card to run at 480p, the picture looks absolutely incredible, its just WAY better than the 36" JVC TV that I have, which is not HDTV, but much better than I had expected.
Thought if I could get it at 1080i, would be more true definition to the TV shows that come on. Also for games that may run at higher resolutions as 800x600 is quite a bit big on this thing.
Thanks,
Guardian.
