Title: Mapping 8-way joysticks to steam games using "generic usb joystick" interface
Post by: drewmullen on March 12, 2016, 12:11:51 pm
This is my first build and i'm getting along pretty well (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149497.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149497.0.html))!

Unfortunately, i purchased a joypad interface for my CP instead of a keyboard interface... I didnt realize it would cause any problems but i'm having a hell of a time getting them to work with games, especially steam games. If i have to bite the bullet and replace them with keyboard interfaces i guess i will but i had to solder these in so that would be a lot of work.

Any advice?

I may have solved this! Instead of physically changing the interface board I'm using a software called JoyToKey to map the gamepad buttons to keyboard bindings.

Working so far - may have issues with games that dont allow you to remap controls (Downwell).

Most modern games default to an xbox360 controller (xinput)

There is a program called x360ce which converts your generic gamepad input to a virtual xbox 360 controller.

That would be the better way to do it IMO.

Tried it first but it kept saying it didnt recognize my joystick... Spent about an hour trying to configure till i switched to JoyToKey. Did you run into this at all?

I've only ever used x360ce with a steering wheel.  Didn't have any issues though.

My stand up cab uses hacked xbox360 fightpads.
It works great for steam games (which don't require analog or dual stick control).
...but it brings with it a different set of headaches for some emulators and older games.
