Guys can I please ask for your recommendations for some of the best Arcade only Formula One (F1) racing games, not games that were available on home consoles/computers at the time etc.
I had fond memeories of one I saw in the arcades back in the day (somewhere between 1988-1993) but have absolutely no idea what it was called. All I can remember is that it had a drivers viewpoint as opposed to a viewpoint from behind the car etc.
I've tried a few quickly in MAME but not really found anything that looks that impressive or gives a real feeling of speed (besides Sega's Indy 500 & Virtua Racing).
Thought I'd ask to see what you guys recommend as I know there's a lot of fellow racing fans out there.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts :)

Those are the only two I ever play. :lol
Ace Driver isn't bad if you have enough horsepower to run it in MAME.
As far as the game you are trying to remember that had the cockpit view, Super Monaco GP was fairly common back then:

Thanks for the reply BM :) It wasn't Super Monaco GP, I played that to death on my Sega Megadrive back in the day though and loved it. The one I mentioned I saw in the arcade was a few years after that and made me think how much the gfx had improved since the Super Monaco days etc.
I played Ace Driver aand Ace Driver Victory Lap tonight and enjoyed them both, just they look really old especially considering they were released by Namco AFTER Ridge Racer!!! :o
If VR and Indy 500 are the only ones you still play that can't say a lot for the other F1 games out there - guess nostalgia always makes things seem better than they actually were!

I had a virtua racing deluxe for a while. One of the best racing games I have ever owned.
-
F1 Super Lap and F1 Exhaust note by Sega and Slip Stream by Capcom are the only ones that come to my mind Gary, but they're all third person view games.

Hey Alex, good to hear from you mate :)
Still seriously racking my brains trying to work out what the old arcade F1 game was that I drooled over back in 1990-1993.
I remember the shape of the cab was a white rear half of an F1 car and when I just saw a picture of the arcade cabinet for Namco's "Drivers Eye's" I thought I'd found the game I was looking for, but that looks like a polygon racer and I thought it wasn't!
Going to put this down to bad memory and an aching to play old arcade racers as if you're seeing them for the first time again!
Thanks all :)

Driver's Eyes is the 3-screen version of Winning Run, by the way, both are early polygon racing games...
Otherwise let's see what else I can find:
Driver's Edge? http://www.mamedb.com/game/drivedge (http://www.mamedb.com/game/drivedge)
Unless you were thinking of non-F1 like Rad Mobile/Rad Rally by Sega
Or a home game like F1 Live Information/F1 Challenge by Sega on the Sega Saturn?

I've just looked up a video of Winning Run out of curiosity, because I can't recall ever seeing one when I was a nipper. I was thinking to myself 'Hmmm, this is no Virtua Racing', then I saw the year it was released in - 1988! Wow, that's pretty impressive for such an old game.

Indeed. Impressive - though rather low framerate and low polygon count :)
Reminds me of Microprose F1GP :D (years later)

At least in F1 Super Lap and F1 Exhaust Note you can switch to cockpit view by pressing start.

Really? I did not know about that, thanks!

What about Final lap as it had lots of follow ups and was everywhere, I think it was supposed to be a sequel to pole position but it was 3rd person only. It did have link up play though.

I did not know you could do that. On a slightly related note, are you still working on the M1 Comm network stuff SailorSat or have you moved on to new things? I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that you'll have a look at the netwoking in Supermodel at some point...

You can get cockpit view by pressing Start in F1 Exhaust Note but to my knowledge there's no way of doing that in the earlier game F1 Super Lap.
If there is a way please let us know as I never found it!

I tried yesterday and had the opposite: no cockpit view in F1 Exhaust Note

Ooops got my games the wrong way round - I meant I never found an in-car view in F1 Exhaust Note!!
-
Hum... Could swear it worked in F1EN the same way. Whatever :)
-
I think the last driving games I enjoyed were Pole Position and Outrun.
Anyway- you wouldn't be thinking of Hard Drivin'?

Oh well, not a big problem ;)
I would be more than happy if such an option could be found in the game setup menu... i will take a look :)

I always disliked that game. Too much technology and not enough game.
