Title: Control panel dedicated to trackball and spinner/paddle controls
Post by: Scassidy24 on March 01, 2016, 08:56:33 am
Hi everyone,

I have a groovy trackball 3" on order and 2 spinners as well as 7" steering wheels for the turbo twist 2 spinners I've ordered

I have a cabinet with your standard two player 6 button fight stick setup and want to make a swappable control panel dedicated to both trackball games and spinner games also want to make the spinners in a good position to be able to pop on the 7" steering wheels for 2 players on games like sprint.

I'm looking for thoughts on minimum number of buttons (I have coin door) for compatibiliy across most of those racing, spinner, trackball games (2 players).  Hopefully I can avoid putting joysticks on this panel I don't think there are any games tht call for both a stick and a spinner or trackball.

My cab is 24" wide and also any thoughts on minimum depth of the CP? thoughts on layout and how many buttons .

Thanks!

Let's not worry about the player start, exit, coin. Etc,   Just the buttons needed for gameplay

Racing is a complete wild card because of shifters, pedals and the like you could easily need up to 10 buttons. However anything legitimately needing more than 3 isn't going to play right on a panel only setup without shifters anyway.

I do believe 3 buttons is the magic number for trackball and spinner games though.

If you plan on playing any of the Golden Tee Fore series, they use 4 buttons (turn left, turn right, backspin, fly-by) plus start.

On the spinner side of things, that Star Trek vector game also uses 4 buttons but you can probably get creative if you have pedals for your racing games.

God I loved that game.

How about something like this? (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160302/60c614937bba8fce0141623f53e4b683.jpg)

You should have a cluster of 3 buttons if you want to play Missile Command.

Well I didn't put a cluster of 3 in but this is just a prototype.

The entire panel will be flippable.  Just slide it out on rails and flip it over and slide it back in.  Without disconnecting any wiring

I can't help you with your question, but I do have a question about your cab - it looks like you used OSB or waferboard.

I looked into OSB when choosing wood for my cabinet, as it has a couple of advantages over MDF (lighter, stronger, cheaper) but the idea of laminating it put me off.
I ended up going with some good quality maple veneer plywood.

Are you planning to laminate yours? Is it even possible once the cab is assembled?

EDIT: never mind, I saw your other thread in the woodworking forum
