Title: Boxcar Bar & Arcade in Raleigh NC
Post by: Le Chuck on February 27, 2016, 09:52:01 pm
Spent the last few hours at http://theboxcarbar.com (http://theboxcarbar.com) in Raleigh. Good vibe, large floor plan, fair mix of 80s, 90s, and modern games. Nice pin selection. Wiz of Oz, TAF, No good Gophers, Pinbot and Jackbot (love me some Jackbot), MM, Popeye, a few duds, a few standards. a few vectors, a few sticky controls but nothing to squawk over. Fair prices. 25c for most everything. Pins at 50 except Wiz and MM.

Worth a visit. I like. Will go back.

It's a pretty good spot. A buddy and I stop through at night when we are up that way. It's always crowded. I took the kids on a Sunday afternoon and it had a good crowd then too.

There is a cool place out in Chapel Hill called the Baxter that is pretty good too.

I'm glad spots like this are starting to pop up.  The newer chains are okay but there is a nostalgic feel to the smaller one off venues.  We have something along those lines here in Detroit at the Checker Bar.  Offworld arcade has set up their machines there.  Its nice to go to a place where a roll of quarters will last you more than an hour.

Quarter fed through TMNT with two other randoms that joined in on level 1.  By the Shredder fight we had drawn a small crowd (meaning that the wall of people around us had turned around to see why three guys were yelling obscenities).  Good fun.

Before that I spent the afternoon at Skyzone which makes up for what it is lacking in games with trampolines.

And ER visits.

I find that Boxcar gets too crowded to play on the weekends, but it is entertaining to watch the younger crowd play Pinball there.  I'm still terrible at Wizard of Oz...

There's also Level Up downtown with a modest selection and 8 pins last time i was there.  I do prefer the Baxter though, the layout is less crowded and the pins all work

I'll have to checkout Baxter soon.  Woz has a huge right side drain out of the bumper trees on the left which I find totally annoying and just poor design.  At a quarter I could look past it and try to play through to activate some of the other toys, at a buck a pop it wasn't worth my time.  Not with better pins to the left and right.

I left early from Boxcar and walked up to Crank House for a pint because of how crowded it was.  It does get insane in there.

I was at a barcade down in Raleigh last year about this time but don't remember the name.  Is this the place with all of the multi games with the wrong aspect LCD monitors?

I only played dedicated, IIRC they only had two multis in the joint.  I'm sure they move inventory around periodically tho.
