Directory of "All Killer, No Filler Gamelists" (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,149708.msg1563036.html#msg1563036)
JUST BECAUSE A GAME IS IN THIS LIST DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WORKING 100% CORRECTLY IN MAME.
LOTS OF GREAT GAMES ARE PERFECTLY PLAYABLE, BUT HAVE SMALL SOUND OR GRAPHICS ISSUES CAUSING THEM TO BE LISTED AS NOT PERFECTLY EMULATED IN MAME.
DO NOT USE A NO-NAG VERSION OF MAME AND THEN COMPLAIN TO MAME DEVS AFTER YOU'VE REMOVED THE GIANT RED BOX THEY PUT THERE TO INFORM YOU THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE GAME. IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO ASK ABOUT AN ISSUE, ALWAYS TEST WITH THE UNADULTERATED OFFICIAL MAME BUILD FIRST.
EDIT: Done. Bat file attached. No CHDs required for this list.
EDIT: 5/16 added Elevator Action Returns since it didn't fit with classics
Ok, by now you know the drill. This is a work in process at the moment.
Doing Run 'N Gun next in case some of these games get bumped over to Beat 'Em Ups or Platformers.
Basically, if the character uses projectiles to attack enemies (and isn't flying) I've put them here. It's open for discussion.
Some of these used rotary sticks, but I think people will still want them in their list anyway.
Buttons can be mapped in MAME to rotate the character.
What stays? What goes? What's missing?

Mystic Warriors is a really fun Konami run 'n gun that is pretty much the closest you'll get to a Sunset Riders followup, starring ninjas this time around.

Mystic Warriors

Caveman Ninja
Green Beret?
SonSon
Toki?
Willow?
I probably would have put Rhoga Armor Force here, but i think you put it in SHMUPS?
What about games like Rambo III and Nam 1975, pretty sure they fit here no? GI Joe for that matter...
-
do Gauntlet and Ghosts N' Goblins fit here?
-
I was gonna suggest Ghosts N Goblins, but I think that's more a platformer. There's probably going to be some crossover between the two lists, actually.
It it does fit, maybe Elevator Action and Elevator Action 2.
-
If possible it would be nice to separate vertical and horizontal games. I like the list so far.

I've got Caveman Ninja and Toki under platformer. They feel more like platformers to me.
Maybe Magician Lord belongs on platformer too?
do Gauntlet and Ghosts N' Goblins fit here?
You tell me. I'd probably call it a platformer also since it requires climbing ladders and jumping.
Should we just say "guns only" and put the other projectile games into platformers?
If possible it would be nice to separate vertical and horizontal games. I like the list so far.
It's possible, I'm just not willing to take the time to do it. ;D
And if I separate this one I'll be expected to separate others....
-
We just need to decide what's going to be the catchall....
I agree that Ghost N' Goblins, SonSon, Toki, and Caveman Ninja probably belong in platformers.
If we don't put Gauntlet here then probably it goes in classics, but then what do you do with Legends? Leave it off because of it's CPU demands?
-
Is there a version of ikari wariors that works with 8 way joysticks? If not, I would scratch it. I don't know most of these games, but I think there are others with rotary joysticks in this category. It's something to look out for.

I'd throw Gauntlet Legends and D&D in with Hack 'N Slash. (which I currently have combined with beat 'em ups)
I'd put Gauntlet in classics.
I ended up putting Shinobi with the run n gun because the gameplay felt more like rolling thunder than final fight.

Maybe I should comment out the rotary stick ones so people who aren't aware they are rotary won't have to figure out that they need to be pushing buttons to rotate their character?

In case anyone wants to see which games use rotary sticks, there is a list here (http://newwiki.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?title=Joysticks#Mechanical_Rotary_Joystick_Games_.28LS-30.2C_Happ_Mechanical_Rotary_Sticks.29).
Maybe I should comment out the rotary stick ones so people who aren't aware they are rotary won't have to figure out that they need to be pushing buttons to rotate their character?
How about having them as a sub-section so they can be commented out or included as desired?

How about XYBOTS?
Works great with the following button map:
1 - Turn Left
2 - Fire
3 - Turn Right
4 - Start/Super Zapper

KING OF DYNAST GEAR is a crappy korean rewrite / remake of "Dyna Gear", the original is superior in every way. King of Dynast Gear rips the sprites (dropping half the animation frames) rips the sounds, and attempts to lamely copy the gameplay; it's like putting 'Fit of Fighting' in a list instead of 'Art of Fighting'
so please, swap it for Dyna Gear, because Dyna Gear is actually good.
-
Ah - probably my favorite category. Nice work on the initial list and I like all the suggested additions. I think games like ghosts and goblins and elevator action are for sure platformers. Also putting gauntlet in hack and slash as its "home genre" is probably most appropriate (it may also go in classics as well but thats debatable. I am not a fan).
-
Blissful irony that Run And Gun isnt a Run And Gun game.
Cant help much on this list, all the r&g games I play are already listed.
-
:bump
Sports is done.
I'll finish up puzzles this evening and start on Run N Gun.
I moved some of the non-gun platformer type games in with hack 'n slash for now.
That makes this list easier to categorize anyway. I will remove the remaining ones as I play test.
Might end up splitting Beat 'Em Ups and Hack N Slash/adventure platformer.
Games that require rotary joysticks were moved to the end and will be commented out on the batch file.
some comments on games mentioned and not added:
Willow - gave it a view on youtube. Although willow throws stuff, another character used later is straight up hack and slash with a sword.
added to hack and slash.
Rhoga Armor Force - too much shmup to add here. It didn't make the cut on the shmup list.
EDIT: List final. First draft of batch file created.
Just need to launch and playtest all the games to see if any needed files are missing.

I'm calling this one done. There are some pretty good games in this list I had never played before.
I ended up moving the following games to PLATFORM:
CHARLIE NINJA
DYNA GEAR
KARNOV
Even though games like Mystic Warriors and Ninja commando had ninja stars instead of bullets, they still felt too much like run and gun games to put them anywhere else.
I also ended up deleting the 8-way joystick hacks of GUERRILLA WAR, IKARI WARRIORS, & VICTORY ROAD.
The gameplay just doesn't work with the character shooting the direction they are walking.
If the hack had allowed you to lock your firing direction while still moving around, then it might have worked.
