Hi
I've just installed CRT emudriver v2 and GM on my vertical cab, and have set the desktop to portrait. Now I want to create all the modes I'm going to need, but unsure of the best way to go about this for a vert monitor. I only want to play vert games using GM, on this cab.
What's the best way to create all the modes I'll need? Do I still need super resolutions?
Any tips on settings I need make in VMMaker and MAME.ini would be appreciated.
Thanks.

It's pretty straight forward.
In VMMaker, pick the right orientation, either "rotating to right" or "rotating to the left" (yes, even if it's not a rotating monitor).
If your desktop is set to portrait, then check the box "Desktop rotates too".
Make sure "Export settings to GroovyMAME" is checked, with the correct GM path.
Just generate and install the modes as usual, super resolutions are fine.
I'd say VMMaker already cares of this, but make sure that it sets aspect 3:4 in mame.ini. (3:4 because that's the rotated aspect).

Thanks, I did all that but something's not right. e.g. I have created a 288x240 mode, but when I run Pac-Man, switchres chooses 488x240 mode instead, and the game is displayed too tall & narrow (squashed in on the sides), with bad scaling. This still happens if I force 288x240 mode.
Any ideas?

No log, no ideas ;)

OK, here's a log and the mame.ini. :)

That's odd. Are you using the final 0.015l version? It's working fine here, even with your mame.ini.
Check my log:
SwitchRes: [ 288]x[ 240]_(60=59.965519Hz)
rng(0): 288 x 240_60.606060p 15.757576 [integ] scale(1, 1, 1) diff(0.00, 0.77, 0.0000) ratio(1.000, 1.071)
vs yours:
SwitchRes: [ 288]x[ 240]_(60=59.965519Hz)
rng(0): 288 x 240_60.606060p 15.757576 [fract] scale(1, 1, 1) diff(36.25, 0.77, 0.0000) ratio(1.000, 1.071)

I'm using latest GM - v170 - so yes, I'm using switchres 0.015l.
I'm getting the tall/narrow display with all games. Deleted all mame .cfg and .ini files to make sure.

I had the same issue. What I did was start from scratch, set everything up as if going horizontal with super resolutions in vmmaker, leave the desktop horizontal. After all that is done and GM is working, go to desktop and rotate, then the final step was in groovymame ini set orientation to vertical and and ratio 3:4. Trying to set up vmmaker with vertical desktop was nothing but headache for hours.

Thanks for the tip - I'll do that. Found that changing my desktop back to landscape also gets switchres to select the right mode (and display the game un-squashed), if I select rotate from the MAME menu.

I don't understand anything. Here it just worked without an issue.

Beats me. No matter what I try, switchres picks the wrong mode and displays the game too narrow/tall, if I have the desktop set to portrait.
I'm using the H9110 preset with an HD 5450, if that makes any difference?

I leave the desktop as is, but then use irotate to rotate the picture. Switchres picks correct resolution for me..
BUT I haven't updated that can to latest versions yet..

Hi big10p,
Please zip your complete MAME folder and upload it somewhere so I can grab it (I mean without the roms of course).

OK, I'll do that today.

Ah! Was just about to zip it all up, when I spotted the cause of the problem. My MAME install is a copy of the folder from my horizontal cab, although I created a fresh mame.ini. Anyway, I forgot I use a vertical.ini on my other cab, which sets the aspect ratio I prefer for vert games on a horizontal monitor. After deleting this file, all seems to work as it should. :)
Sorry, my mistake (again). :-[

That was a relief for me ;)

Yeah, sorry for the false scare. >:D
