okay here are some little sketches i did in paint. im going to make the mega cab style, and im trying to decide on some designs for the part that will hold the TV....ill call it base, and the part that will hold the cp...ill call that the pedestal just for ref. purposes. so check out these pics and tell me what you think.
this one is a pic of the base...the tv is on top obviously, and that little box on top is the marquee. just concentrate on the support underneat the tv.
-
heres a pic of the pedestal
-
heres the assembled1...
-
heres the assembled2
-
I prefer b for both
-
the assembled B is what it looks like on the dreamauthentic site...or at least close it. and im just wondering what will be best for support purposes of the tv and stuff. opinions?
-
I prefer design"B". It would make for better installation of a coin door in the pedestal, if you are planning to include one.
-
The TV has good support on both; and I think either version will work fine for that.
I would DEFINITELY do version B for the pedestal though.
My reasoning is that, if you look at version A, you are going to have to lean forward to play it.
Your feet can only get so close to it, and the rest is going to be your upper body leaning in.
I personally would make the pedestal lean AWAY from the TV part a bit.
That would give you a much more comfortable playing position.
Alternately, you could slant the kick panel on either version, so that it makes room for your feet to get in farther under the control panel.
-
"B" is nicer looking. I don't see the point of the extruding part on the back of "A", isn't this going up against a wall? If so you could just bring it straight down, with the obvious exception of the monitor itself.
edit-> nevermind... keeps it from tipping backwards ;)
-
thanks for the replies! about the kick panel thing....so are you saying that i should angle it inward at the bottom instead of just going straight down (pedestal/cp)?
-
will you be sitting down to play the games? If so have you thought of where your knees will be. Most of these type games at my local arcade are just boring boxes for the pedestal but the control panel top protruded more towards the player so you could get you knees under it.. Just something to think about.
-
are you talking about the pedestal or the control panel itself? which pertrudes out?
-
The control panel that sits on the pedestal protudes out so you can get your knees under it. but if it's not sit down then ignore this.

oh okay, i gotcha. just keep the cp out a little, and keep the B design right?
-
B design looks good and seems to get the thumbs up from everyone else.
-
I like B better but I would suggest modifying the front side
of the pedestal to have the bottom slant in so there is room for their
feet instead of a flat vertical panel for the front of the pedestal.

-
like this???? cuz this looks like it wont be very stable.
-
The slanting in of the front panel just near the bottom sounds like a good idea. However having a cut in at the pedestal base and the panel with over hang could make the unit front/top heavy especially when someone pushes down on the panel. So if you were to do a slant in the front panel, leave the side panels as they are for support purposes.
-
hmm, i dont know cuz the design i made just now looks like its going to fall off!
-
Side panels will remain the original shape for B, while the front panel will have the slope in it at the bottom. Side panel in red

AH! i feel like such a retard. i was reading your post, and i was thinking"...uh i still dont underst.....oh geez, im an idiot." i understand now, just disregard my stupidity. yes thats a great idea.
and this brings me to my next question.....WHAT SHOULD I CALL THIS THING? maybe i should make this a seperate post...but i need some bad ass name for it. i dont want to take something thats already been thought of, but i dont want to stretch too far from the "arcade" "mame" type of names. any ideas. i was thinking some kinda "Monster...."something. thats just an idea im throwing out. i also what a good color scheme for the buttons and colors and stuff. suggestions?
-
Well it's pretty big so why not "The Mamestrocity"
-
why not just keep the angle on all pieces and on the
bottom of the pedestal and throw some decent weight in the
part of the pedestal closest to the tv.. This way it wont
tip over at all. no matter what kinda pounding your friends
give it.
-
wow, very nice....as soon as i saw that a lot of ideas went through my head. ill work on that name, and try to come up with some ideas for a marquee and design and color scheme. Mamestrosity is really cool though. i hope you arent charging for that idea though ;D
im not very good at creating the marquees though, the whole photoshop thing really isnt my forte. im sure somebody could help me with that though on this board.
oh and by the way....TIMMMAY!
-
How 'bout Hulk-A-Mame-ia ?
-
ha, well i posted something about that a long time ago and got some guy to make test marquee for me, but ive decided that i dont want my machine to be themed around hulk hogan. it would be cool though, check my little quote under my icon picture thingy.
-
Won't be charging ya for the name. I was originally going to use that for my cab due to it's large size but have decided to go for Arcade of Darkness instead.
-
okay...well im going to use that name now....my project has officially been named....MAMESTROSITY!!! thanx dude. if i make any money off it, ill send you the royalties ::)

I just noticed that... was that there before?
-
yeah ;D sorry if you thought it was original. that was the first name i thought of when i first came on this board. so i had that since around september or so. sorry dude.
-
I hope the CP won't be that high - won't see the whole screen very well.
-
The pic cdbrown posted was exactly what I had in mind.
The sides staying out for support, but still having room for your feet.
-
I hope the CP won't be that high - won't see the whole screen very well.
no the cp wont be that high....thats not to scale or anything, just a quick drawing.
-
Just an idea i had recently about pedestal designs...or other designs that use a lot of controls...
If you make the base rotateable so that either side faces the player... you then do not have to reach that far to get to different controllers.
All you would have to do is to mount half the controls facing inwards.. and make the base easy to remove from the monitor section. Maybe some outer panel clamps? Unclick, rotate, click and play : )
This design could also be used for frankenpanels.
If skilled you could also make the base part on a lazy-susan type platform that somehow locks into place...simular to unclets design.

I'm a dumbass.... I'm pretty sure I did see that down there before. Probably why it came to mind so qucikly ;)
Working too late... must... sleep....
-
ha, its cool man.
Xiaou - i'm not too big on the moving cp's. plus, if i build this type of cab, then i wont need to worry too much about how big the cp is.
