Title: Possible workaround for hi/lo shifter issue?
Post by: lotuschaser on February 06, 2016, 08:59:01 pm
Hello all,

After messing with mame on my driving cab for a while, trying to get shifting working, I'll be trying a different route.

In mame chase hq shifter works well enough with the toggle option. I keep wondering if somehow two switches would work better.

So here's my big idea (probably also someone else's...haven't done much checking)

There is a playstation 2 Japanese Taito collection called Taito Memories 2 Gekan, with Chase Hq in the list of games, SCI on one of the other volumes.

Just tried it in PCSX2, it has two separate (programmable) inputs for  Low Gear and High.

In the next few days i'll be trying this out on my cab, will have to wire the extra switch.

it's a bit specific, but chase hq was how i got into emulation 12 years ago, so a driving cab without perfect gameplay chase hq is..not an option.

If anyone's interested i'll post findings, otherwise I'm posting this for future chase hq nuts weighing their options.

Best wishes to all, thanks for the hobby

There are several solutions listed in the MAME section of the driving cab info thread:

As of MAME v.151, the toggle can be disabled in the game's individual cfg file.

Most of the old games only had one switch in them.  If the switch isn't pressed, the game defaults to the opposite gear.
Not sure how consistent this was in defaulting to hi or defaulting to lo, so you might still need two switches for all games to work correctly.
(but you'll only be mapping one for each game)

You could also just use the NO tab of your current switch for the opposite direction, but that would have to be disconnected when mapping other controls.

... and while loading the operating system, or the pressed button would be disabled.

Buy a 3 position switch.  Wire the ground of the switch normally and use the 3 pos switch to switch between the shift input being activated by NO, NC or off respectively.  Problem solved.  ;)

*edit*

If you went ahead and added an additional switch anyway it would be a fairly universal shifter as you could use it for up/down shifting as well.
