Hi everyone, I have read a couple build threads that mention adding a 2nd plastic nut or taping the exposed threads on lit buttons. Is this to control the light from leaking everywhere or does it actually improve light output? Thanks.

to control the light from leaking everywhere
^ This.
With the buttons being close together and the LED at the bottom of the button body, quite a bit of light can leak from one button to another.

To contribute to the conversation, I put black rings I made out of sticker material on the bottoms of my buttons to combat leakage. It worked great.

Thank you Scott and Yotsuya. Thanks for posting the pic Chance. It's very helpful to see the difference.

I got the idea from the beast. But he used heat sink. I had the extra nuts so I used them.

Yeah, on my first MAME cab. They only light up on games that they're active. You know, in a meaningful and informative way that helps the user.

The way i've been saying to use them since you've been telling me traditional buttons or GTFO?

That's harveybirdman who's all about the GTFO. I wouldn't put them on a dedicated cab.

And actually, I wouldn't put them on any other MAME cabs I build from here on out, either. Unless they're Atari volcanos. Those are just bad ass in their own right.

I hoard those things like candy. Love 'em. Wish someone would come out with a modern replacement for them.
