Title: Best frontend for someone in their 80s?
Post by: Ginsu Victim on January 26, 2016, 11:05:47 am
My friend's dad is housebound and bored. He wants to play console and arcade games on his computer, so his son asked me to help out with an easy setup.

I don't have time to configure a frontend that's too in-depth, so what's the fastest one to set up (just point to roms and emus and go, no screenshots/videos needed) that will be user-friendly for someone in their 80s?

He will be using a 360 controller his son gave him to control everything.

For mGalaxy was the easiest to configure (no need to mess with txt configuration) but I don't like it too much. More flexible are F.E.E.L MAMEWAH and MaLa.

A plug-n-play tv games with a dedicated tv permanently set to the av input.

I mean maybe he's especially sharp, but from my experience people in their 80's have trouble understanding the tv remote..... You can't even get them a Blu-ray player because they can't understand the concept of av inputs or the fact that different devices use different remotes.

My guess is his son probably isn't aware of how difficult it is to learn new things at that age.  I suggest puzzles or something analog.

He was a "computer programmer" (his son's words) in his younger days, and he seemed like a sharp guy when I was around him. He already has a computer he uses all the time, he just wants some classic games. Mostly I was looking for a fast setup to help him out sooner rather than later. He lives alone after losing his wife a few years ago.

I'll probably just use MAMEwah since it's the one I know best anyway.

Thanks for the replies.
