Title: Astro City-Nanao MS8-29FSG monitor turns off after about a minute its turned on
Post by: tackill on January 18, 2016, 11:12:54 pm
Astro City cabinet
Nanao MS8-29 FSG

So a few days ago my astro city cab decided that it wanted to turn off on its own after about a minute that it was plugged in. To even get the screen back on for another minute, the monitor would need to be unplugged for a few minutes. Before that, the screen would wobble for a bit but the picture would eventually fix itself .

I'm not using the original PSU since I decided to go with a new jamma harness and I didn't have the tools to use the same molex connectors. The way its connected is the red wire is Line and the blue is Neutral on the power supply. The multimeter shows that the AC is getting 120v AC and 5+, 5-, 12+ on DC. As far as the power supply, it seems to be OK in that department. The monitor has been working for a few weeks with just some wobbling on the screen.

I did pull out the chassis and cleaned it as it was super dirty. I didn't give it a full good look since i'm not too sure what to look for but I did see two fuses. Those two fuses checked out fine by the multimeter.

Sticker that shows that it uses the described chassis:

Video of the issue:

You will notice that the screen wobbles starting around 35 seconds it and the monitor turns itself off. Everything else is still turned on.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

OR
Does anyone know what other type of monitor that will fit into the astro city cab? its a 29".

caps-loads to change

you can fit a nanao ms9-29 chassis on that tube but you need to split the deflection coil connector in two and adapt the vertical to the correct gauge to fit the vertical header

Thanks grantspain!

I'm going to do both. I want to do the cap kit because its just something I need to get familiar with. I also want to have an extra chassis on the side as backup.

As for the nanao ms9-29 chassis, I found this instead of getting the ms9 http://www.arcadespareparts.com/arcade_parts/monitors_chassis/inch_monitor_chassis/13171.html (http://www.arcadespareparts.com/arcade_parts/monitors_chassis/inch_monitor_chassis/13171.html)

On the site it says that its compatible to my tube and i'm hoping that I don't have to modify anything.

you may need to mod the vertical size circuit, just a resistor change

be aware you will get some side compression on these tri sync chassis, they can be modified by changing a hv cap-the 31khz tends to be fine whereas the 15khz gets a little compression
also scan lines look more pronounced on these chassis than the ms8 or ms9

there are a few different types of nanao ms9-29 chassis. It doesn't matter which one I get?

3 types
ms9-29su   sega universal
ms9-29t      taito
ms9-29a     auto switching

they all run on same tube, some chassis are modded to run on different tubes but its only a couple of component changes
