Hi All

New user here, I've been following Mame for a very long time so I've decided it’s about time I built a standalone cabinet. I'm going to build a catch all system with Hyperspin as my front end.

I've got most of the hardware and part of my design I want to be able to play my favourite game, Star wars, which will need a yoke. As it’s next to impossible to get a yoke, I’ve decided to make my own.

I need some advice / help with the construction of the yoke. I’m going to see if I can modify a USB roller ball mouse and base my building on Menace Yoke guide for the chassis of the yoke.

Does anyone know where I can get the grip assemblies? Possibly a UK supplier. I’ve been looking at the ones at na.suzohapp.com website and liked the ones with a thumb buttons, that way it can double for steering wheel for games like spy hunter.

The original SW yoke used potentiometers and centering springs -- like a 270 degree wheel, there is a physical center position and you get a specific output value determined by the angular position of the wheel.

A mouse (optical) interface works like a 360 degree steering wheel -- it does not have a physical center position and outputs relative commands telling the cursor to move left/right only when the wheel is turning.

Yes, some people do play SW using a trackball, but a trackball doesn't have hand-grips.

TL;DR version -- An optical interface is NOT going to work for a SW yoke.  Use pots.   ;D
