Donkey Kong jr. ! One of the few games I really like ... and totally suck at. I'll start with 31,800.

First thought: WOW!  I can't believe this hasn't been picked.   I haven't played since we spent $50 to buy the Colecovision cartridge.   That was probably the last full priced cartridge we bought.

Second thought: After a few hours of playing I realized I hate this game and I could care less if Donkey Kong is enslaved to that damn Italian plumber.

Nice pick. Pleasant, straightforward, balanced. Like a fine wine. Not really. But a fine game.

72,700

41,400 . Slight improvement. Beginning to hate the game.

This looks like the last competition of the year (unless we also count the next one, which starts in 2015 but ends in 2016).

Per this ( http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,148483.msg1550008.html#msg1550008 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,148483.msg1550008.html#msg1550008) ), waki & yama are tied with 39 points each.

Now's a good time to decide if this is the last comp of the year or not. My vote is "yes."

A lot is riding on this--Popsicle has to add an engraved plaque & ship the Bronze Joystick Trophy to the 2015 winner, & the 2015 winner gets to choose if the points/rules/etc. need revision or not. My preference on revision is "no."

When this was posted, I first thought I might have a shot at this.
as I go to post my score, I see other scores...
i then quickly realize i have no chance :o

anywho, still a good game regardless, just hard for me to get used to being iv never played it before, other than the game & watch gallery for the GBC.

Just keep trying, you'll get better eventually. It took me an unbelievably long time just to get past stage 1, and I still die regularly in stage 2. It's just a matter of practice.

true, practice makes perfect.
iv only been able to make its high score table once with 7k.
imma try and stab at it a few more times tonight.

The biggest source for points is killing critters with fruits. Find a safe spot, wait till you get an opportunity. If you manage to kill two birds with one stone (ha !), you'll get 800 points for the first one and 1200 points for the second, plus 400 points for the fruit, this makes 2400 points in about 5 seconds.

THE biggest rule to success : Don't rush things. Be patient, take your time. Watch where the critters will be going and avoid them. Don't take risks, that will get you killed. I have lost count of how many times I have died just because I was being impatient and bumped into an enemy.

majority of my screw up always come from trying to rush when in a tight situation, and then forgetting you can simply jump across all vines.
imma swap my stick to 4 way mode and give another go.
iv gotten better results using a 4 way instead of 8 way on 4 way games.

Too bad this isn't the Atari 8-bit version.  That's the one I played so much in my yute.

I like the spark factory better than the dodo bird stage.

Currently nursing a shoulder injury, can't play worth a damn, certainly no where near my best. But, I couldn't pass up on DKjr.

Here's my weak entry.. hopefully the shoulder feels better soon and I can give a REAL score.

Might have to fire the machine back up this weekend before the competition ends to ensure a victory.

Hello Everyone!

I just recently found out about this high score competition and it looks like a little late to the race but I decided to start participate anyway.

Having never played dkjr before I gave a weeks worth of my best shots and 73,900 was all I could come up with.

Look forward to competing in the future!

So, should the plaque read 'YamaMiko' or 'Wakitetsu'?

Seriously, I can't mail the bronze joystick to two people.  How about a one week sudden death between the two champs?  >:D

Per http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,137522.msg1418949.html#msg1418949 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,137522.msg1418949.html#msg1418949) , in 2014, I laid down this rule:

"
If there's a tie at the end of the year, the player with more 1st places wins.
If that's still a tie, we'll have the 2 tiers play a short play-off game.
"

Unless somebody overrode this rule for 2015, I say it still holds. :]

Ok, then. I'll get the bronze joystick primed for WakiMiko.  Congrats Waki!  :applaud:

Is everyone ok with me updating the stickied comp thread after each 2 weeks?  Waki is free to take over, but a new thread would have to be created and stickied.

I really like how yamatetsu has kept a spreadsheet and totals - please continue this!  :applaud:

I daresay that everyone will be ok with this since someone has volunteered to do the work  :)

Will do.

And now for something completely different : Compo #182. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think that the game should either have been chosen by popsicle for being 3rd in this compo or perhaps by Waki for having won the overall compo (don't know if there is a rule for that).

I'm sorry, it's been years since I've won a competition so I didn't know that first place didn't pick the new game. If popsicle or Waki want to start comp 182 with a different game, I'll delete the Maniac Square comp.

Congrats to quarterstringer on winning this round. I would have tried to beat it, but I've been under the weather since last Tues. and didn't feel like spending 2+ hours in front of my machine. Also congrats goes out to WakiMiko on winning this years bronze joystick award!
