Probably a stupid question so I'll apologize now..I got the control panel on my cab all setup and am ready to hook up the wiring to the switches. So when I push the joystick up in activates the down switch so now when i hook the wires up to my encoder to the player 1 up, do I connect it to that down switch or the actual up switch on the joystick? Same for left and right since they are reversed as well? Thanks again

It can be a bit confusing.
Its all backwards. So pressing up does activate the bottom switch. The bottom switch should be wired to the up port on the encoder.
Same thing goes with the left and right.
Its not a huge deal because you should be able to map everything in the software. So if up is actually doing right or down you can just change it in the program.
What encoder did you go with?

generally, the ACTUAL switch that hits when you press down, is what should be connected to down. Yes it is reverse, but you want down to go to down, and right/left to right/left, but it will always be backward. Technically when you map it in a system, it wont really matter. But if youre beginning, get in the habit of going with the true direction switch to encoder

What he said. Just observe which switch is activated for the actual direction you want to go. Much simpler to get it right at this point, rather than screwing around in software later...

What they said.
I find it very helpful to mark all the switches on the underside of the panel before I start wiring. (Example: P1Down, P2Up, etc.).
If you dont want to leave these marks on your panel, just tear off pieces of frog tape, place above or below each switch and write on the tape. That way you can peel the tape off after wiring is done.

Thanks guys..I got th encoder that came with the Xarcade diy kit I purchased..does anyone know if the same holds true for this encoder?
-
it don't matter what encoder you have. Just take the wire from the encoder that is assigned to let say "LEFT" and wire that to the joystick switch that activates the LEFT switch (which is the other side).
-
just want to add:
Make sure when hook up everything on the Joystick, hook up the wires to the "COM" and "NO" on the switches. Attach the GND from your encoder to all "COM". Only need one COMmon wire from the encoder to attach to four switches but you need four wires UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT from the encoder to wire into the "NO" to each switch.

While I was busy creating my fancy art package, Thenasty beat me to the post. I'll post it anyway.

This is the underside of your control panel. Just wire the switches to the encoder like that. Note : This only shows how to connect the 'NO' parts of the switches to the responding parts on the encoder.

Encoder does not matter. Always go "true left switch" to left terminal.

This is the underside of your control panel.
Only if you have x-ray vision and are looking down through the panel. ;D :lol
If you are looking up at the underside, the "down" switch will be closest to the monitor and the "up" switch will be closest to the front of the cab.

Duh. Fixed.
