Title: PVM 20L2 any good?
Post by: Andykara2003 on December 07, 2015, 12:43:18 am
Hi, I have a chance to pick up a PVM 20L2 in good condition. It has 600 lines (Which is what I want for the softer arcade look as an alternative to my BVM) and is relatively recent, being the successor to the 20M2U.

I've seen a couple of posts on other forums saying that they're disapointed with the image of the PVM-20L2 as it seems a bit dull. Perhaps they just have tired/worn sets?

I'm aware that this PVM won't be as sharp as the higher end PVMs (that's why I'm buying it) but is the image noticeably dull? Would it have more 'punch' than a consumer set?

Cheers...

I've read this as well.  My other PVM is the 14" version of the L2's and it's a pretty decent monitor. I still play a lot on it, and the image quality is pretty good. But it might be that the size of the screen is better for the lower TV line count...

Here are a few shots of the 14L2 (connected to an RGB modded NES), it might not be the same as the 20" but perhaps close since it's the same model line.

Thanks for taking the time :)

That looks perfect for what I'm looking for. Looks nice and bright with the softer, less scanlined image that I'm looking for..

Like you say, though, that might not translate so well to a 20" - 14" is always going to look better like for like.

I'm looking for a softer, more gently scanlined alternative to my BVM-20E1E (1000 lines). I have the PVM-20L2 and a 700 line Ikegami TM20-20R lined up but I can only take one of the two and each are in different parts of the country.

The PVM is likely to have fewer hours, being a late model, and the Ikegami is much older - but if the PVM typically has a dull uninspiring image from new, then low hours won't help.

If anyone can shed any light on the 700 line Ikegami (shadow mask) vs the 600 line  PVM  thing it would be great to hear any further advice....
